Shear Panels - transmit shear stresses Spar Caps Rods - Carry Tension and Compression Loads
The spar caps represent rods. Rods can carry tension and compressive loads. They represent all of the skin structure between the spars. The thin blue lines are called shear panels. A detailed explanation of their function is beyond the scope of this course, but in general, they model the transmission of shear loads. Note they connect the rods vertically and horizontally.
Consider the section of the box beam surrounded by the blue oval and imagine the upward deflection resulting from an upward distributed aerodynamic load. This is not unlike what you would see looking out the window of an aircraft during take-off. Explain and describe what structural element we have considered in this course that this section may be modeling.
