Chapter 18, Problem 1RQ

How is the angle between power strokes determined?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

Explain how to determine the angle between power strokes.

Explanation of Solution

Each four strokes (one cycle) of events need that the engine crankshaft constructs two full revolutions or 720degree rotations. This means each stroke of the cycle needs 180degree rotation of the crankshaft. When the number of cylinders is more, the power strokes of distinctive cylinders will occur quicker together.

The number of degrees made by the rotation of the crankshaft between the power strokes can be formulated as an angle. The angle between the power strokes of the engine can be determined by dividing 720 by total number of cylinders in the engine.

The expression to calculate the angle between the power strokes of the engine is as follows:

  Angle=720No. of cylinders

For four stroke engine with four cylinders, the angle between the power strokes will be 180degree.

  Angle=7204=180degree
