With Spun Text Detection, Bartleby Write helps premium users avoid improperly paraphrasing the sources they use for their papers. The tool is powered by machine learning algorithms that are trained using papers/texts generated by commercial text spinners. So once a paper/essay is uploaded for analysis, the tool scans it, highlights the sections it finds similar to the output of an automated rewriter, and suggests rephrasing those bits.

Since using text spinners prevents students from engaging in original thought and results in poorly written papers, it is largely discouraged in academic writing (or any kind of writing, for that matter). Thus, this feature proves especially useful as it can help students accurately and naturally convey their research.

How the Feature Works

This is how Bartleby Write displays spun text detected in a document:

Bartleby Write Spun Text Detection

Bartleby Write identifies instances of spun text in your paper to prevent you from paraphrasing text unsuitably.

The potentially rewritten text is highlighted in blue like the other writing issues identified by the tool. Details of the issue can be viewed on an error card that appears to the right of the editor. Clicking on the card expands it and displays:

  1. The improperly paraphrased text
  2. The disclaimer “This text appears to have been copied and modified from another source.”
  3. An info icon next to the disclaimer, which can be clicked to reveal a popup with the message “Our machine learning model has flagged this text as similar to the output of an automated text spinner. You should verify that this text is completely original and rewrite it if possible.”
  4. A “Dismiss” button that allows you to dismiss the card

The error card shows the rewritten text with a disclaimer, info icon, and a Dismiss option.

Bartleby Write considers spun text a writing issue. Thus, every instance of spun text is included in the count of Writing issues in the scorecard as well as in the Results filter.

Additional Notes on Using the Feature

  • Any section of your paper identified as spun text by Bartleby Write is how the tool perceives an automatic text spinner might write it. It’s a good idea to tally each highlighted bit with the source used for research to check if the writing is original or not. If there is a close resemblance, you can rewrite the text. If not, you can Dismiss the card.
  • Borrowed research or data is not highlighted as spun text. Instead, Bartleby Write identifies it as potentially plagiarized content. In such cases, citations can be provided from the Plagiarism error cards where necessary.
