The Progressive Era was a period that changed America greatly due to political reforms and social activism. This era brought forth many changes in America and almost all Americans were involved in this movement somehow. This period began in the late 1800s and lasted until the mid-1900s. The Progressive Era was one of the biggest movements in America. The main point of this movement was to purify the government. Several historians have wrote excerpts on their perspective of the Progressive Era. George Mowry, Joseph Huthmacher, and Glenda Elizabeth Gilmore are three key Progressive historians. In their writings, each of the historians explain who the Progressives were, who was affected during this time, events that took place in the community and government, and other topics.

The progressive movement is a middle class response to take on the problems that was caused by the industrialization in the rapid social change that took place during the civil war. It is a collection of reform movements. The progressive era was when reformers or activists who were working to solve the problems in the American society and the government were trying to end the laissez-faire. The root of progressive started during the glided age. This era started in 1890 and ended in 1920. A solution was needed to eliminate all the problems that was faced over the years. The fight for social justices include social reforms, women’s suffrage movement, and political reforms.

Looking back on the Progressive Era, we see many women activists and their roles in the fight for women’s rights. With the arrival of a new century also came many changes. Society was adjusting to industrialization, urbanization, a growing and powerful economy, and, of course, immigration. As a result of these changes, many people became fearful that traditional values would change as well. Progressive Reform in America began in the late nineteenth century, and an expanding job market as well as changes to the American lifestyle lead to women’s want for change in their public roles. Women activists began fighting for issues such as more opportunities for education and jobs, health advancements, and of course, voting rights. In doing so, women made great advancements in suffrage during the Progressive Era, and without a doubt, changed the nation for the better.

What are the main points of this reading (focus on concepts, ideas, and then, not on individual facts)? Chapter 27 deals with the politics and cultural abundances during the Cold War. Because of the Cold War the U.S. gained many new technologies and ideas such as the interstate. Space Shuttles and tornado sirens were also created because of the Cold War era and the new threats it brought. Suburb development was the major effect of the new economic era. We developed new housing areas such as Levittown, along with the new area came new shopping malls and urbanization. There was still the threat of nuclear destruction in this time of development. Many leaders were afraid of the Domino Theory that would allow communism to spread at an alarming rate. One major battle that came from this idea was the Cuban revolution led by Fidel Castro. Along with the new economic and political changes came social and cultural changes. Texas and Florida were being flooded with Mexican Americans who came to work in the U.S. and then were supposed to go back to Mexico. African and Mexican Americans were fighting for their civil rights and equality. One example of Mexican Americans struggling for civil rights was Hernandez vs. Texas. African-Americans had a huge movement forward during this time. There was the Little Rock Nine, Martian Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and the Montgomery bus boycott. The U.S. now bordered Mexico, which had won its independence from Spain in the 1820s. In 1836, Texas broke off from Mexico and formed its own republic; in 1845, under the presidency of James Polk, and the U.S. brought Texas into the union, though the Mexican government continued to regard Texas as a part of Mexico. Progressivism was not just a single movement, rather it was several different organizations of people trying to accomplish their own goals. Keep in mind, this era was a few decades long, so many things were accomplished over a long period of time. Women exercised what they saw as their rights as citizens to shape public policy and create institutions.
