Authoritative Parenting Styles Paper

Around the globe, there are various studies regarding the relationship between parenting styles and academic achievement. In the report, two common parenting approaches shall be reviewed. Moreover, an ideal approach would be introduced.

During early childhood development a key factor that influences our aspects of behavior is the type of parenting styles our parents used. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of parenting styles and college students academic achievement. Also to find out if parenting style would a valid predictor of children’s success. Thus, three types of parenting styles were measured those being authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive. These parenting styles were identified by using four dimension of parenting as identified by the college students, disciplinary strategies, warmth and nurturance, communication styles, and expectation of maturity and control. Academic success was measure using grade point average (GPA) of the college students. Analysis revealed that only authoritative parenting style had a correlation with students and high GPA. (Huey, Sayler, and Rinn, 2013)

Children do not come with guidelines or instructions. What they do come with is a crucial set of physical and emotional needs that need to be met. To raise children properly, parents duties are not limited to just food, shelter and protection. Parents are largely responsible for their children’s success in life. Parents are required to teach and educate children. They have to shape knowledge and character into their children to prepare them to face the real world. To be successful with this, parents must provide self esteem needs, teach moral and values and provide discipline that is both effective and appropriate. As the generations have changed, many parenting styles have evolved, as well.

Before having kids, everyone has an idealistic fantasy of what type of parent they are going to be. Will they be a Mary Poppins or a Mommy Dearest? These two women parented in very different but similar ways. Mary Poppins used an authoritative approach to parenting whilst Mommy Dearest used an authoritarian approach. Authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles are the most widely used styles in modern day parenting, with authoritative parenting being the one with the most positive results in terms of child development. They are similar in what parents expect from their children but differ in the way that parents respond to their children’s needs. The effects of the chosen parenting style can be seen in the way that a child feels about themselves and how they interact with the outside world.

However, they"(Morin, 2015) do "allow exceptions to the rule"(Morin, 2015). Authoritarian Parenting establishes rules but expects that the children/child will follow them without exceptions. Permissive Parenting tends to be lenient and only tends to get involved when there is a serious problem. Uninvolved Parenting is neglectful, they seem to "not meet"(Morin, 2015) the "children's needs and expect"(Morin, 2015) them "to raise themselves."(Morin, 2015).

There are three main types of parenting styles: authoritative, permissive, and authoritarian. There have been many studies conducted in an attempt to gain insight on the efficacy of the parenting styles aforementioned. Studies have found each of the respective types has varying parenting philosophies and effects on the children they are used on. Authoritative parenting is often regarded as the best parenting style and it is characterized as high in warmth and high in control. Authoritarian tends to produce negative results in children, as it is characterized as being low in warmth and high in demand (Sartaj & Aslam, 2010). Permissive parenting yields the worst effect for the outcome of children, characterized by high in warmth and low in control (Aldhafri, 2011). Factors such as culture and child behavior can affect parenting styles but parenting styles influence factors such as academic self-efficacy, behavior and social skills in children, so it is important for parents to be mindful of which style they use. Many psychologists throughout history have indulged in studies related to parenting behavior and how children are affected from such behavior. The work of Diana Baumrind, which is considered to be one of the most influential and well-studied theories of parenting behavior, was the first to identify three styles of parenting (Sclafani 44). It is interesting how much impact a particular parenting style can have on a child’s wellbeing and development throughout the child’s life, including adulthood. According to Kol (2016), the parenting style can influence children aged 5-6 years and their social skills. The author conducted a study of 231 students in that age group and used two different surveys to identify the parenting style of the parent and the social skills of the child. Kol (2016) found that children with parents who practice the democratic style of parenting, which is similar to that of the authoritative practice, had the best social skills for that cohort. Diane Baumrind’s typology has two major dimensions. The first dimension is responsiveness. In the text it mentions that responsiveness “refers to the extent in which parents respond to and meet the needs of their children.” (Knox 364). This is when parents support, encourage, and foster their children’s needs. The second dimension is demandingness which is “the matter in which parents place demands on children in regard to expectations and discipline.” (Knox 364). This is about how strict a parent is and how much control these use on their children.

In the early 1960s, psychologist Diana Baumrid conducted a research, analyzing child-parent behavior, seeking to identify parenting styles. The Baumrid study and other further studies identified four main styles of parenting (Miller, 2010): the authoritative parenting style was characterized by fair rules and consequences; The Authoritarian parenting style was characterized by strict rules and harsh punishment; the permissive parenting style was characterized by minimal rules with little or no consequences; the uninvolved parenting style was characterized by no rules, and parent presence was almost non-existent. In this paper, I’m going to look at the authoritarian style of parenting in an attempt to draw out its characteristics and its immediate and later impacts on children impact.

It is apparent throughout research parents have a high impact on the outcomes of adolescent emotional regulations and the behavior during adolescents (Feldman, 2011; Jabeen, Haque, & Riaz, 2013; Millings et al., 2012). Jabeen et al. (2013) states "parents play a crucial role in the social and emotional development of children" (pg.85). This part parent's play can be effected as stated above and the fluidity of parenting styles and their effects on adolescents should be observed. Through research looking at performance in school by Areepattamannil (2010), finds that supportive parenting yields higher achievement in school and is nearly as close in relationship to socioeconomic status.
