Duty comes from the Old French word “Duete” originating in the late 1250’s to early 1300’s, a past participle of the Latin word “Devoir”. In which both of these word’s meaning to have an obligation or commitment resulting in action of oneself due to moral commitment. An early philosopher by the name of Marcus Tullius Cicero said “Duty is a result of being a human, is a result of one’s particular place in life, is a result in one character, and also a result of one’s own moral expectations.” Many people even believe in a “Civic Duty” that is one being responsible enough to obey the law, pay taxes and serve on a jury, These are just a few of many “Civic Duties” people acknowledge in our society today. Find opportunities to improve oneself for the good of the group.” However if I had to put my own meaning to the word it is simply your responsibility to yourself and others to complete a task that has been laid in front of you in a timely manner and with mitigated risks. By failing to comprehend or fulfil your duty you not only fail yourself but, also your team. Upon doing this your team will begin doubting your ability to fulfil your mission as a part of a team and as an individual, some may even begin to doubt your moral character and your ability hold the position you have been placed in by a superior. Article eighty seven of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) states missing movement as the following “Any person subject to this chapter who through neglect or design misses the movement of a ship, aircraft, or unit with which he is required in the course of duty to move shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.” In the case of general court martials not only do they have the ability to reduce the accused grade to Private (E-1) but, they also have the ability to imprison or discharge the solider. In the case of a dishonorable discharge you lose all benefits and entitlements you previously worked so hard to achieve. This can also be put under Article 92 within the UCMJ which has three way for the offense to be committed, the offenses are as followed. Offense one: “violates or fails to obey any lawful general order or regulation.” Offense two: “having knowledge of any other lawful order issued by a member of the armed forces, which it is his duty to obey, fails to obey the order; or.” Finally offense three: “is derelict in the performance of his duties; shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.” This offense in the UCMJ is also not taken lightly, as it can result in dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of pay and allowances, as well and two years of confinement with in a prison.
