For years historians have spectulated about how the Civil War began in the first place. Some say it was slavery, others say it was many factors building together. I believe that it was two factors coming into play is what set off the war, slavery and President Lincoln’s election in 1860. The first factor, slavery, had been a big dispute in the United States for a while. Complications started building up whenever we added new states to our country. Some states were more accpeting of slavery than others. Kansas, for example, didn’t like that they were going to be a slavery state very well. the result ended with two “official” slaves in the state and ‘Bleeding Kansas’ dispute in 1856, with about two-hundred men killed in a two month period. …show more content…
Once he was elected, South Carolina seceded from the U.S. in December of 1860 becasue they knew that he would put an end to slavery. A month before his inauguration, six other southern states seceded, forming the Confederate States of America. Jefferson Davis was elected to be President and Alexander Stephens as Vice President. The capital was placed in Montgomery, Alabama and the Confederacy had a good government running before Lincoln was inaugurated. On the flip side, Linoln believed that you couldn’t just secede from the United States, he believed that it was illegal. He also didn’t want to bother where slavery already was, he just wanted to put a stop to it. The final straw that pushed the Confederacy over the edge was Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter, which waslocated in South Carolina, was one of the last forts under control of the federal government, not the Confederate government. Lincoln didn’t to confront the fort armed, yet also didn’t want the fort to be under the Confederate control. Finally, on April 12th, 1861, the Union proceeded to make advances toward the fort and once it fell to the Confederacy, that, was whenever the four-year long war, called the Civil War,
One could argue that the true causes of the Civil War were states’ rights and taxations. Although this played a large part in the start of the Civil War, slavery was the ultimate factor that led to this event in history. Economic and social differences between the north and the south, fights between slave and non-slave proponents, the growth of the abolition movement, and the election of Abraham Lincoln are all events having to do with slavery in the United States that led to the start of the Civil War.
Many causes led to the Civil War. This all happened around the mid 1800s. It was a conflict between the Northern and Southern states. Both sides had their own view on slavery, and their separate views caused contentions between the two. Both had different views on whether to expand or stop slavery growth to the West, or have slavery at all.
The post-Civil War, also known as the extended period that came to be known as the Gilded Age, was largely centered around and influenced by big business and corporations. The newfound efficiency of resources and mass production resulted in a wide variety of available products but also a wide divide between classes and a misdistribution of power that led to the forming of unions and passing of anti-trust legislation. Big business employed money and power to control and manipulate the economy and politics to their own advantage through dishonest means and exploitation of poor immigrants. Americans such as Samuel Gompers worked on the creation of different labor unions to protect the common people and authors such as Jacob Riis and Stephen

Good Question. I'm here to answer them. But first let's talk about what it was. It was a war in the United States of America about the North and South. America was splitting up side vs side. Many people think that the Civil War was fought only because of slavery. Could other things have contributed to the cause of war? These events include: economic issues, cultural and social issues, and political issues.
The Civil War was a battle between the north and south, and most people assume the reason the civil war happened was just that of slavery. This is true but most people don’t truly know what really started the Civil War 40 years earlier than the war started. The Civil War was truly started by one thing alone, the Missouri Compromise of 1812. The Civil War was an event caused by the Missouri compromise and all the ripples are created through the 40 years after. After the Missouri Compromise and its good job of holding the balance in the House, and Senate, but failed to keep people from speaking out against what it did, making political leaders speak up and battle between this compromise making one half of the country are prejudice group. Civil War causalities as in all wars since then, are usually classified only as those who fought, who were killed, wounded, or missing during the Civil War. What many do not understand or even consider is the sphere of influence a war has on families, communities, and economies and in this case slaves. While we will never have an exact number of casualties, an estimated 600,000 people were killed, wounded, or declared missing during the four years of war. Many of those who died were killed in battle, but many of those who did not fight but the war affected are always unaccounted for.
The time leading up to the Civil War was plagued by extreme sectionalism between the North and South caused by major social disagreements, as well as economic and political differences. The differences between the regions contributed both to the start of the war and the war’s outcome. In the years 1861-1865, the North and South each had significant advantages and disadvantages during the Civil War. Although the South’s passion for the “southern cause” was very strong, the Union also presented a huge commitment to the war and their values.
The period following the Civil War was a period of profound change in the South and the North following the end of slavery. For former slaves were in a difficult position following the war they had received their freedom, but not much else. For the freedmen there was a brief belief that freedom would grant them everything that they needed to succeed. They wanted an equality of rights with whites. Frederick Douglass said that “Slavery is not abolished until the black man has the ballot” (Foner 89). African-Americans wanted these rights to guarantee their status as citizens who would not be dominated by their former Confederate neighbors. Former slaves as also wanted land to work on under their own terms. “To the former slaves, the war with
Between the period 1860-1877 the Civil war has had a consequential impact on the United States. Economically, the Northern United States rose with the use of industrialization, however the South remained economically decrepit and continued to be so decades after the war. Politically, the United States dealt with controversy over the power of the government. Socially, black people were granted rights in the Constitution but the emergence of certain policies put a limit on their rights and the intimidation from white supremacy groups prevented them from putting their new rights to use. The overall impact of the Civil War on the United States was the economic development and devastation, increased government power, and restraints on rights meant
he Civil War was the greatest battle in American History; that lasted from 1861 to 1865. It began after the secession of eleven Southern states from the Union, and their first attack on the government. The basis of this war was primarily over the abolition of Slavery, State rights and the election of president Lincoln. The aftermath has mainly impacted the South as they were the source of the problem. Due to most battles being held in the South, crops were burnt, mills destroyed and houses were demolished. They became in a critical state; without the excess labor that slaves provided, their economy collapsed and they were unable to rebuild themselves. An immense loss of properties was approximately worth 2.5 billion dollars . Additionally estates, factories and
The Civil War was one of America’s greatest battle the has happened in U.S. history. Now what if President Abraham Lincoln had lived? Now as many americans remember the event that happened at Ford Theater on April 14, 1865 right, but what if John Wilkes Booth missed his shot, or what if President Abraham Lincoln had stayed home instead of following his wife's wishes for a night of fun.
The Civil War often called the “first modern war” was a fundamental event in the American history. The Civil War resolved an essential issue that was not addressed by the revolution; whether slaves were included in the rights of Declaration of Independence which claimed that “all men were created equal”, or not. Although the war started with the purpose of preserving the Union, it ended up with termination of slavery in the United States. No one expected that the war would last for four years, as a result, both sides of the war, the Union and Confederate States, were not ready for the war. There was the issue of distributing food and weapons, and supplies to soldiers, as well as disease and lack of medical equipment. Although President Lincoln
In the early to mid-1800s, the northern and southern parts of the U.S. were arguing about many topics but one major one, slavery. The North believed in abolishing slavery while the South wanted to keep it. This argument led up to The Civil War. Some major reasons for the beginning of The Civil War are, John Brown’s raids in both Kansas and Virginia (West Virginia now), Bleeding Kansas, the Kansas and Nebraska Act, and the Dred Scott Trial. Two other reasons that it happened are Abe Lincoln’s 1860 election and southern states seceding because of it.
The civil war was mainly sparked by tensions between the north and the south. Both sides rarely agreed on topics and could never make a compromise. Slavery was a big reason for the start of the civil war, but the causes don’t end there. Although some may say that political or economic reasons started the civil war between the north and the south, political reasons were the real cause. This is because of important decisions made by the government, and the south seceding.
