Since the inception of human civilization there have been countless cultures and societies which have helped shape the current world today as we know it. The modern human race dates back more than 200,000 years and in that time frame many cultures have risen to great virtue and success only to deteriorate or cease to exist altogether. First before examining one of these cultures we must know what culture truly means. Culture is according to Zimmermann (2015), “the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts”. One culture that I am not affiliated with and did not grow up in is the Hispanic/Latino culture. Today, this culture is one of the fastest-growing cultures in the United States of America (“Understanding the Hispanic/Latino,” n.d.).

Essentially, every culture has a specific basis, native language, religion and custom that reflects its history, values and beliefs. These conceptual constructs represents the total reality of life within the community of which is commonly known as “Culture”. Culture is not only a race, but is a way of life. In the United States, there are many different races that integrate with the American race and culture. However, these individuals often times may have difficulties adjusting, adapting or maintaining their heritage. How well they acculturate and adapt to the process can have an impact on how well the individual is able to integrate or engage to one or another culture.

Culture is the most direct, obvious and visible way in which people experience interconnections between societies in their daily lives (Held 44). It is very likely that rapid population growth would stimulate a great diversity of art (Foster and Blau 344) The United States is and always has been a banquet of cultures.

Culture refers to a system of norms and values that are shared amongst groups of individuals and when they are taken together they represent a living system. In America there are different cultures. Each culture has its advantages and disadvantages. The current problem or issue is on the problem of race in American culture. The history and the effects of race, and analyzes why people think about race as a problem in American culture and why it has to be addressed.

Culture is one the most important aspects in a society. A person’s culture influences their life from the day they are born to the day they die. It has a major impact in every indivuaduals life. Culture impacts the decision of what a person is named, to the language they speak, how they speak, how they dress, how they look, what they believe in, what they value, and so much more. Culture is what makes the world unique. America is known for its variety in different cultures. The nation is known for its opportunity of prosperity to every. It’s one of the few nations where thousands can say they came with nothing but the clothes on their back and the “American dream” in their hearts and successfully can say they “Made it in America”.

Culture is a convenient way of describing the ways members of a group understand each other and communicate that understanding “Culture is not only race or ethnicity; it includes gender, sexual orientation, education and literacy level, profession, hobby, or life experience that may include violence, trauma, or disease. Each of these cultures has their own language or slang, and group behavior and beliefs”

Culture by definition is the identity or feeling of belonging to a group. It is part of a person's self-conception and self-perception and is related to nationality, ethnicity, religion, social class, generation, locality or any type of social group that has its own distinct culture. To me that definition couldn't be more spot on but let's go more in depth over the past few months in my English class we have been trying to learn what our culture is and what part culture plays in our daily lives so in this essay I will be sharing with you what I think culture is what it means to me and how I think it impacts our way of living and the way we look at each other as human beings and how we treat each other and how all this makes up my culture

Culture is a behavior that consists of several critical elements, such as language, religion, race and ethnicity, clothing and politics. Culture is what one does in his/her daily life. In order to understand others, we must first keep in mind that every culture carries its own set of values and assumptions. Culture is an evolving, ever changing civilization, which includes several different groups people. For immigrants, America is a land of opportunity; for others it is just the best country in the world because of its economic success and/or its democratic political system. Culture can be defined in many ways due to the fact that everyone can have their own distinct and traditional beliefs and values. “ Culture is fluid, it is not a static entity which one takes out of the box on occasion. It is with us daily” (Cultural Handout). Someone’s culture is set as the characteristics of the group practices in language, religion, types of food, social traits and habits, and the distinct arts and music. There are a variety of different cultures for example, Western Culture, Eastern Culture, Latin Culture, Middle Eastern Culture, and African Culture. All of these different cultures have their own ideas, values, and individualism, laws that are implied, civil rights, and even technology. In our, “ Culture Handout” culture is defined as the tool of the mind, “ it is an individual’s way seeing and interacting within the world. It encompasses one’s values systems, beliefs, and perceptions of the world around them. Race, socio-economic class gender, sexual orientation, ability, geographic location, age, religion language, etc. all impact the formation of culture, but these various context are not culture” (Cultural Handout).

A previous study by Menon and Shweder detailed the “cultural expertise” of Oriyas regarding the icon of Kali, a goddess well-known in their culture. For Oriyas, the image of Kali biting her tongue represents “lajya”, or shame. However, their conception of shame may differ from typical western views of shame. What emerged from the interviews conducted in Menon and Shweder’s study was that shame seemed to be a respected duty of the women in the culture, and brought about social harmony. This idea seems to be reconcilable with Markus and Kitayama’s review of independent and interdependent cultures, if it is assumed that the Oriyas interviewed were from an interdependent culture. In an interdependent culture, the self is construed in relation to others; a self is thought of as complete only in a social context. Conversely, in independent cultures, which are typically western, the self is thought of as entirely separate from others, and is encouraged to strive for their own desires without thought to how their actions may affect others. That is not to say that those in independent cultures have no empathy for those around them, and neither is it true that those in interdependent cultures are unable to think for themselves. It is simply a construal of the self in relation to others, and as Markus and Kitayama showed, this leads to several different ways of interacting with the world when a person originates from an independent or an interdependent culture.
