Essay On Hero's Journey

The definition of a hero is someone that has distinct qualities like courage. Someone that is admired for his or her brave actions and sacrifices. Someone who puts the wants and needs of others before his or her own. The definition of a hero for me is my father, Charles Edward Johnson Jr. He often has much on his plate, but still finds a way to be a true father to my brother and me. My dad demonstrates all the qualities of a hero and then some.

My great-grandmother was the matriarch of my family. When I was in seventh grade, around thirteen years old, she passed away due to breast cancer. This misfortune created an extremely difficult time for me because, not only was I adjusting to the environment of junior high, but many other issues were occurring in my life; this was the third death that I was having to deal with. Unfortunately, one of the previous deaths (that I was still trying to hurdle through and come to terms with), had occurred almost exactly a year before the passing of my great-grandmother. The second death that I had gone through occurred only one or two months before my great-grandma has passed. All of this turmoil created numerous internal conflicts for me, but also taught me a key lesson to keep note of, for the rest of my life.

Watching a film, one can easily recognize plot, theme, characterization, etc., but not many realize what basic principle lies behind nearly every story conceived: the hero’s journey. This concept allows for a comprehensive, logical flow throughout a movie. Once the hero’s journey is thoroughly understood, anyone can pick out the elements in nearly every piece. The hero’s journey follows a simple outline. First the hero in question must have a disadvantaged childhood. Next the hero will find a mentor who wisely lays out his/her prophecy. Third the hero will go on a journey, either literal or figurative, to find him/herself. On this journey the hero will be discouraged and nearly quit his/her quest. Finally, the

Hunger Games, Star Wars, and A Wrinkle In Time have many similarities, and differences when they go through the Hero’s Journey. The Hero’s Journey is what the main character goes through in a book or movie. For example, Harry Potter, The Hobbit, Ender's Game, and much more.

The Hunger Games, Star Wars, and A Wrinkle in Time all relate to the Hero’s Journey in different ways, but there are also similarities in the approach of Hero’s Journey. The refusal in Hunger Games and Star Wars are alike in the fact that Katniss and Luke’s choice of refusal is for the best of their family. Meg, however, has no choice and regrets going until she realizes that she will get her dad back. Crossing the threshold is different because Katniss has time to soak up the information and Luke just has to leave right away. During the point of the Test/ Allies/ Enemies, the stories are different by the intensity of the events; but they are also alike. When I was younger, I grew up with four grandparents who I could spend time with. As I started to grow older, my grandparents started to deteriorate. My grandmother developed Alzheimer’s, and more specifically dementia. I remember one day at my beach house when I was talking to her, she asked me who I was because she couldn’t remember. She didn’t remember her own grandson. She started to lose all her memory and she had difficulty hearing and speaking. It got to a point where there was no way of communicating with her, and we wondered if she even knew who her own family was. She went through this deterioration for upwards of 5 years, and I it got to a point where I forgot what she was like before she developed the mental disease. I would watch
