There are many things that people do during their leisure time. Some people choose to stay at home and read, and others choose to go out and play a sport. Most people who choose to do a sport choose to play baseball or football, but some choose to do more unconventional sports. An unconventional sport that some people choose to do is bowling. When people think of bowling, they do not see it as the real sport it is, but rather a fun thing they go out and do with friends. Contrary to popular belief there are many kinds of bowlers that make up the sport of bowling.

The sport of bowling has a lengthy history packed with an evolution that has comprehensive rules; and is an indoor activity that has become one of the most popular sports in the world. It can easily be said that over 50% of Americans have bowled once in their lifetime, whether it was for a birthday party or on a date. However, many people bowl routinely without knowing anything about the interesting history of the game.

To start off, the basics of bowling are very simple, yet very important. One of the origins of bowling was believed to be in 3200 B.C. in Egypt. A British anthropologist, Sir Flinders Petrie, dug up a grave that appeared to have remains of a crude form of bowling.

There have been other ideas of when bowling actually started. Several ideas portray, “Some assign a possible origin of bowling as late as 3200 BC with a collection of objects which appeared to be an early form of bowling. Others assert that bowling began possibly in 300 AD or in England circa 1366 under the reign of King Edward III” (Carrubba). This specific information connects to how there have been sightings of the early forms of bowling. There have also been tools found that show similarity to the concepts used today in bowling all over the world.

The popularity growth of bowling struck so many people’s lives early on that in 1366, King Edward III (King of England 1327-1377) outlawed it merely to keep his troops focused on practice. It is almost certain that bowling was popular during “the reign of Henry VIII.” Also, by this time there were many disparities of these [pin] game. Even though skateboarding wasn’t that advanced with tricks, they did have simple tricks because skateboarders knew how to go up and down ramps (Care). In 1976, the first outdoor skatepark was opened in Florida (Werner 108). Eventually, they did advance in tricks, and one of the most common tricks used was finally invented.

Bowling for Kids' sake is a fund raising event that will happen for local Big Brother Big Sisters of Franklin County for the second year in a row at two locations which are French King center in Erving, MA and a bowling alley in Shelburne Falls, MA. This will be on April 7th and 8th. The local organization itself has been around for 50th years. The way the funds are raises is through bowling teams being formed and then those individuals try to get donations from their friends, colleagues and families. The minimum amount to get is 75 dollars for adults. The minimum for Children under 14 who are playing on one of the teams is 35 dollars.
