Week 2: January 17-23 Michael D. Bayles “The Professions” In Michael D. Bayles “The Professions”, Bayles describes the basic characteristics of a profession. Instead of providing a single definition Bayles instead defines the term profession based on three basic characteristics due to the complex meaning of the term. The three characteristics he identified that all professions must have include: extensive training, intellectual component included in the training, and must provide important service in society. Based on these characteristics that Bayles identifies I believe my profession of a teacher strongly correlates with Bayles definition of the term profession. I think most people agree that education is an important service to society, however in recent years there has been a shift in how individuals will receive an education. There are a growing number of students who are completing their education through online sources or through homeschooling. Because a student can receive an education through other sources do teachers still provide a necessary service to society? I believe that teachers do provide a necessary service to society because of the extensive training we receive and the other services we provide outside of education. The extensive training we receive allows us to provide the tools, advise, and services to students in order to be successful this is something that is hard to provide through online schooling or homeschooling because of the limited teacher to student interaction. I also believe that teachers serve many different roles in young person’s life, although we are educators we can also be sources of guidance and comfort to a student’s life. As professional teachers, we are trained to serve the student in a multitude of ways, and if we are unable to provide a specific service we are trained to direct them to someone who can serve the student. Teachers serve the students therefore they serve
