11 December 2017 An Artform Have you ever been in an argument and after some time of going back and forth you begin to slowly realize that perhaps you were wrong the entire time? After being showered with statements and positions on the topic you feel as if you have changed your views in accordance to the other’s viewpoint. This scenario is the basic explanation of the purpose of rhetoric: to, in short, change the beliefs of the opposing side. When used correctly it can be a powerful tool. Rhetoric is an artform of many styles, such as visual rhetoric, rhetorical analysis, and rogerian style formats, that allow you to choose and model your own argument to shape your position and when used wisely

Rhetorical analysis focuses strictly on how the author writes and not what the author writes. It analyzes the strategies used and the order in which they are used. Overall, this looks at all of the pieces and strategies used and discusses why they were used in the precise way that they were. This makes rhetorical analysis different from any other strategy by allowing the writer to look at other writers’ works and learn from them. Therefore, the use of rhetorical analysis can expand the knowledge of writers on the subject as well as the use of rhetoric by taking away techniques from the analysis. It can also be useful in understanding the other side of any argument. Once you understand a speaker’s thought process and delve into why the speaker organized things the way that they did gives the audience a deeper knowledge of that point of view. I have never been given the opportunity to learn about rhetoric much in the past. With this skill of rhetorical analysis it allows me to gain more knowledge in the subject in a new way. Instead of learning from powerpoints and lectures I can discover my own style and strategies by learning from other writers and how they use it. This skill sets up a bright future in rhetoric whenever I need to use it in future classes. Understanding other writers thought process is important to not coming off as one sided and close minded. It is hard to communicate with anyone when they come off as that which is where rogerian style arguments can

The first chapter introduced the reader to the art of rhetoric. He describes how rhetoric works through real life examples. He demonstrates ways that rhetoric persuades us like, argument from strength, and seduction. He tells the reader that the sole purpose of arguing is to persuade the audience. He showed that the chief purpose of arguing is to also achieve consensus, a shared faith in a choice.
For instance, rhetoric is often used in politics. The rhetoric used in politics can make one side of the argument seem better, and it often points out the flaws in the opposing debate. This creates a positive outlook on the person debating, and causes the audience to believe, and side, with them. Since we are constantly surrounded by rhetoric, it is our job to choose which opinion we agree with, and which will benefit us.
Rhetoric is the study of how writers and speakers use words to influence an audience. Pathos, Logos, and Ethos are examples of rhetorical devices, where the rhetorician would appeal to an audience to prove a point. In both the Declaration of Independence and The American Crisis #1, the authors use several examples of rhetoric to persuade their audience in the 1700s, to separate themselves from England.
In reference to the 100A assignment sheet for the rhetorical analysis, a rhetorical analysis is a written work that focuses on analyzing and understanding a published article. In this assignment, students will get opportunities to develop their writing and improve deep analytic skills to identifying rhetorical strategies that writers will use to achieve the purpose of a well-written document. The audience for this analytical paper will be my classmates, professor, and the committee members of the 100A.
In Thank You for Arguing, written by Jay Heinrichs had introduces to the reader about the rhetoric concepts and strategies that give us to understand more about offense and defense in an argument. He is not just to explain the concepts to the readers for how to build up a stronger argument but to make the readers to know what purposes that argument puts in our lives. Although rhetoric tools is hard to fits in our everyday life, Heinrichs still would help us to gain more ability on utilizing the knowledges of the rhetoric concepts, and convinces us to influence on our behavior that act in the argument.
Analyzing an essay includes summary and paraphrase to better explain someone’s point, but it is also looking to how the author did that essay, why he did that essay, and to whom he wants this essay to be directed. While I was looking to all my previous assignments, I learned that while an individual is writing an analysis, it is very important for him/her to be aware of making the essay clear, and who is the audience. When I looked to my first brief assignment of identifying rhetorical choices, I saw how I did not understand select and explain rhetorical choices. It was unclear and some sentences did not make any sense. Also, because I am used to use an attention getter in every introduction, I thought that it could also be applied in an analysis essay, and what I learned is that I could use one, but not a long one because sometimes, it may distract the readers from what the essay is really about, an analysis. When I was taking English 1301, I also went to the writing center, and teacher’s office hours. It was very useful to me because I learned different ways to right a paragraph, and other things. In the writing center, I learned to think more about the audience, they made questions like: who is the audience, how will this reference affect the audience, and is it really worth to use some of the things that I wrote. Also, with my instructor, I learned that I
In “Backpacks vs. briefcases: Steps towards Rhetorical Analysis”, Laura Bolin Carrol explains the importance of the rhetorical analysis to understand the purpose and intent of every situation. She points first how people always focus their first glance to the others physical appearance even though there is a saying that “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Through our past experiences or moments, we can conclude quickly that person or thing we are observing or analyzing. Most of the time this is done even without noticing that we are doing it, without understanding there is something behind it, and Carol explains that is the rhetorical analysis. She also explains how understanding it, and becoming proficient in it, will help to “become better
Rhetoric has the capability to change their future boss’s perception of their character by building their credibility or ethos. (Heinrich) Rhetoric is also important for trying to persuade somebody a point or idea by using the environment around any given situation. Imagine a young couple strolling along the beach at night. The man gets on his knees to “Tie his shoes” when in actuality he is grabbing a small black box from his pants. The young lady looks back to see him kneeling and looking at her with his eyes full of confidence, but behind these eyes this young stallion is scared beyond his worst nightmares. “What if she says no? What if she says yes? Am I prepared for this next step? Does she really love me?” All these thoughts are crossing his mind in a split second that feels like an agonizing eternity filled with tension so thick you could cut it with a butter knife. However, this man is rhetorically strong; he realizes that the longer this tension continues the harder it may be for her, or even him, to say yes. So, he changes everything by simply smiling and pretending to laugh at how corny this is (even though subconsciously he knows the irony of the
In “Backpacks vs. Briefcases: Steps toward Rhetorical Analysis”, the author, Laura Bolin Carroll describes the essentials of rhetorical analysis and how it helps us make decisions in our everyday life. She begins by explaining how we unconsciously analyze and conclude our perception of people when we meet them. This introduces the readers to rhetorical analysis. Rhetorical analysis is articulating imagery or surroundings that persuade us on our choices. Carroll believes that this is an important aspect and that we can make better conclusions if we utilize rhetorical analysis on our day-to-day encounters. She further states that there are three parts in understanding a context of rhetoric. They are (1) Exigence: events that require actions
Rhetorical analysis is a way of analyzing material. The goal of rhetorical analysis is to consider several aspects of writing in order to conclude if a specific message was shown in the way the author intended. These aspects include the materials content, the purpose of the material, the authors background, the structure of the material, where and when the material was published, and the topic. The process of rhetorical analysis is mostly based on three pasts: critical read, rhetorical strategies, and persuasive appeals. Critical reading, the first step of rhetorical analysis, is used to understand if the material successfully conveys the message the author intended. To do this you should take the material
Rhetoric’s are used in every occurence of our lives whether we are aware of them or not. From the way we greet new ideas and thoughts, to the way we function with already existing notions, regardless, rhetorics have incorporated into our daily life from the first few months of our lives. The dictionary recognizes rhetorical to mean ‘the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques.’ What’s the main concept to explore of rhetorics, are the main uses and techniques that are commonly used.
Rhetoric gives you an avenue to tell a story from your perspective in a way that connects with the intended audience without having to be one hundred percent substantiated. This writing style is evident in almost everything we read from billboards to Internet ads and even political speeches.
students a better chance at attacking the topic without actually attacking it. A common ground is hard to find but that is why rhetoric is so fascinating. This is a way to help students argue with their parents and win, where persuasion is everything, and to help get a point across.
