Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye, sets forth the story of three young black girls living in the town of Lorain, Ohio during the 1940’s. The story primarily focuses on the life of Pecola Breedlove, which is narrated through the eyes Claudia, who also reflects upon the events through the course of a year. These girls face challenges in their everyday lives concerning fitting into society regarding their skin color and status as minorities. Morrison illustrates extreme situations and plants her characters in these situations to bring forth the seemingly submerge fragile issues of colorism, eluding to a slight context of beauty and racism that are still prevalent today.

Despite the story being set in the north, the notion of racism still applies here because racism is not solely related to the south. The African American citizens living in Lorain, Ohio are faced with discrimination everywhere they go, such as at school and with their interaction with the white citizens. Firstly, Claudia and Frieda are discriminated against when they encounter Rosemary and she remarks to them about how they “can’t come in” (Morrison 9), referring to a segregated society in which the races cannot interconnect with one another, as well as how the society has engraved this idea of segregation into Rosemary. This is only one of the many discriminatory situations that take place in this book and in this particular situation is a factor in how, the color of their skin, mandates how they are not allowed in certain places. Another racial incident includes when Pecola goes to a small grocery store and wants to buy ‘penny candy’ that is owned by Mr. Yacobowski. At this store, Pecola decides to buy Mary Janes and when she holds out her hand towards him to pay, “he hesitates, not wanting to touch her hand” (Morrison 49). Throughout the book, she describes the childhoods of both adults, namely Polly Breedlove and Cholly Breedlove, and children, specifically Pecola, Claudia, and “Junior,” and leaves the reader to figure out how their childhoods shaped who they are. In the novel. Morrison argues that the totality of one’s childhood, including one’s home and experiences, is key in forming one’s disposition and character later in life. Famous African American social reformer Frederick Douglass once said, “Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob, and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.” In other words, Douglass believed that a society that takes advantage of and devalues people of a certain class, including—considering Douglass was a civil rights activist—racial class, is perilous to the people living in that society because the oppressor will feel threatened by the oppressed and vice versa. With this in mind, it is relatively easy to relate the idea of class oppression to Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye through Mr. Yacobowski, a minor character and low-class, white immigrant, a member of one of the lowest classes in 1940s America. During the time era, discrimination was often used against immigrants as a way to separate them from native citizens. For decades there has been an ongoing discussion on society’s standards of beauty and what makes someone beautiful. In Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye she challenges white standards of beauty. Just like today, the society in Loraine, Ohio establishes a standard of beauty, and this beauty is defined as being as close to white as possible, having blonde hair, blue eyes, and a “Jack and Jill” family. Most of the characters in The Bluest Eye attempt to conform to society’s standards (complicating this idea) and believe if they can achieve at least one of the aspects of beauty their life will be better and they will be treated in higher regards. Through the female characters of Pecola, Claudia, Maureen, Geraldine, and Rosemary it is prevalent that there is a spectrum of beauty and the person who is closest to this standard, white skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes, is considered pretty and is respected by society, while a person who is not close to this standard is considered ugly and is treated poorly by society. By ascribing to society’s expectations of beauty, Geraldine extends the role of white supremacy and undermines her own self-worth.
The reader first sees Pecola encountered with racism from a white man with Mr. Yacobowski. She goes to the store to buy Mary Janes and "He does not see her, because for him there is nothing to see." The narrator emphasizes the fact that "their ugliness was unique."
