It is essential that carers work in partnership with all of the people surrounding the individual they are supporting in order to ensure the best possible support and care is provided. This will include carers, families, advocates and other people who are sometimes known as ‘significant others’. In order to work well in partnership, there has to be good communication and the carer will therefore need to have good communication skills. Other people could provide useful information to support a carer in their work and vice-versa. This is good partnership working. An example might be if there are communication difficulties. A carer or family member can share information about how best to communicate with an individual. This enables the individual to be listened to and supported in ways that they desire.
Make sure you are able to get appropriate feedback so that both parties are working towards the same goal and know what each other expect.
I have built a rapport with the individuals that I support and feel that they take my advice/guidance into consideration and understand that I don’t want to prevent them from doing things and making their own choices. I feel this has helped when supporting individuals in managing risk, being able to work together to find a way for the individual to take full part in the activity/task while still doing everything we can to ensure safety to the individual and those around them.

As a way of helping Client X she was given as much independence as possible to try and make the transition easier. As she became used to the carers coming into the house she soon became glad of the company due to being unable to get out of the house on her own. This then grew an element of trust between the client and the carer which meant that she was then more willing to participate with the carers and would communicate with them on a regular basis.
