Riordan is based in the United States, with an expansion manufacturing plant in China. The Chinese plant produces fans. Mass Customization
At the present time, Riordan is receiving customized orders worldwide under individual customer contracts. This separate process demands time and labor costs separately from the regular supply chain management. Simchi-Levi, Kaminsky, and Simchi-Levi (2008) describes that if each unit of the supply chain performs specialized skills and applies learning curve process, workers can develop expertise and efficiency for mass production. Because each process of the supply chain manages these modules with more efficiency each time, fans can be assembled separately in order to customize products according to customer’s requirements. This differentiation in the product also involves efficiency and low cost in all the processes. Riordan Manufacturing can use their Pontiac, Michigan plant for final customization details on the product with the only purpose to delivery in less time to big markets like the United States and other America countries. The Michigan plant can receive a semi finished product from China without affecting quality and costs, only for mass customization purposes, in order to generate additional customers with innovative products with competitive advantages. This process causes a huge inventory spike during slow production times thus requiring a large amount of storage space and upfront costs. There is not a standardized method for the individual assembly areas to communicate parts shortages back to the raw material storage area. Also, as indicated during our analysis, the network infrastructure and current systems at the plant are very outdated causing system slowdowns and reducing plant efficiency.
