The CIO’s role is very important in an organization. This job is broken into two different roles and organizations structures should understand and follow the guidelines. A CIO is a strategic planner as a primary roles and an executive as the other role. CIO often acts as a business leader and relationship builder. Power and control should always be allocated within an organization.
The CIO is generally a senior executive responsible for information technology and computer systems for the organization. They are responsible for the organization’s security posture. Some of their responsibilities might include: overseeing the IT department; identifying, developing, and implementing new IT Concepts; network access and IT infrastructure. Often they are responsible for recruitment and hiring the IT staff.
The CIO has become a leader within firms with senior experience and a key contributor towards the strategic goals of a company. Usually CIOs come from a background of either computer science, engineering or information technology. A few skills that are very important for chief information officers to be skilled in are analytical skills, collaboration technology, and more recently customer relationship management. Also going back to roles of the CIO it is important that CIO can find the links between strategic goals for the firm and the technologies available for use. This means CIOs need to not only know the technology within the company, but the technology within the marketplace
