Off and on over the years, I have heard about GMO’s from time to time. GMO’s are genetically modified Organisms. Which basically means that they have been changed by means of science to be resistant to bugs or other issues that crops face. In the American food supply GMO’s are quite common, we don’t even know if we are eating them. As of right now “70 to 80 percent of processed food that Americans consume contain plants that have been genetically engineered” (source 2). This being the case there are a number of ethical concerns raised by this. This article is about the Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) labeling law that President Obama signed, the law allows companies to label their products in anyway they want to indicate the presence of GMO products. This article discusses the controversy between both sides of the GMO labeling debate, the pro labeling side desiring to know what they are consuming and the against labeling side expressing their fear that the label of GMO on a product would make consumers turn away unnecessarily. This law was a compromise to both sides as it requires a form of labeling that makes it possible for inquiring consumers to find what is in their food but also does not require companies to clearly state the presence of GMO.
Genetically Modified Organisms are organisms in which the genetic material or DNA has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally. This is done in order to get traits such as longer shelf life and pesticide resistance. They were developed because the perceived advantage is meant to translate into a product with a lower price, greater benefit, such as the durability and the nutritional value, or both. GMOs have not been proven to be safe as of yet. The long-term consequences of them on our health and environment have not been adequately investigated. There is a contentious debate today whether or not GMO labelling should be mandatory. There are arguments both for and against mandatory labelling across the world. Consumers have the right to know what is in their food. They should also be able to identify foods they wish to steer clear of. Some may also want to steer clear of GM foods for ethical or religious reasons. Consumers may be against mandatory labelling because those who wish to buy foods without GMOs already have the option to purchase them; organic of GMO-free. There is also debate stating if there were a nutritional difference or allergic characteristic in the GM foods, it would have to be labelled no matter what.

My first reason that GMO foods should be labeled is because, ”In 2013, the journal ‘Food and Chemical Toxicology’... linked the herbicide Roundup and Roundup-tolerant GM corn to cancer and premature death in rats.”(GMOs: Pros and Cons) If rats get sick from eating GMO foods, then imagine what it could be slowly doing to our bodies. We, as consumers, have the right to know exactly what we are eating and how that is affecting our bodies.
