Statement of Philosophy and Educational Goals
In the following report, I will be discussing my personal philosophy on education and my educational goals. My philosophy will include some of my personal opinions on the nature of students, the nature of knowledge, the purpose of public education, teaching methods and the importance of curriculum. My educational goals will focus on my development plans and future education.

I think when social studies are presented in a manner that gives facts, and then allows for interpretation it is most interesting. That leads me to my beliefs on what the purpose of public education is.
I feel that the overall purpose of public education is to help students become well- rounded, knowledgeable citizens. I also feel that public education should also be used to encourage students to pursue higher education. As a teacher, I hope to excite children to learn about social studies. Through my classroom, I would feel accomplished if students learned, retained, formed opinions, and sought further knowledge on the subject matter that I taught.
In my method of teaching I would tend to be somewhat of an existentialist. I would tend to focus on how students learn. Since history is a large category of social studies, I would want students to learn many things other than simply facts and dates. I would hope to show students that history is made up of “real people”. I would want to show the culture in which people lived, and relate aspects of that culture to modern day life. When presented in that manner, I think dates and facts of history become much more important. Through such an analysis, I think a student will personally grow and look at history in an entirely new manner.
In disciplining my classroom, I would be fair but strict. In my experience, the classrooms that I have in have had discipline problems
The purpose of education in the United States is to prepare young people for their future by giving them the knowledge and skills so they can be successful. The purpose of education is to create emotionally healthy young adults that will make good choices and are responsible.
Deciding that I wanted to be a teacher didn’t take much effort; deciding what kind of teacher I want to be however, takes much more thought. There are numerous educational philosophies, most of which can be traced back to one of four major perspectives: idealism, realism, pragmatism, and existentialism. All of these philosophical systems have an impact on educational thought; however, I find it hard to choose
I believe that the goal of education is to help students be able to survive and thrive in the real world. I believe that the role of the teacher is make sure students understand the standards that are set, to help them grow and to help them get through the school year. I believe that students should keep an open mind, positive attitude towards school and help those around them. I believe that parents and community members should help students with schoolwork, supplies and be involved in their education. I believe that knowledge is power and it is what helps us to survive and thrive in any situation.
The nature of students is that of an instinctive ability to learn. Students of ages and all grade levels reflect their surroundings and respond according to their interpretation. Naturally it is not only the influence of a classroom that shapes a student but many outside factors that determine students’ goals and abilities; for example, healthy encouragement from parents. Students may find a natural ability to perform in one area of education and with help may fine tune their ability to better their understanding of other areas. Students have a better understanding of education when it is relevant to their needs and everyday life.
It is very important to know the nature of your students. I strongly believe that all children can be taught, but not all at the same level. All children have different levels of learning. Some students may be faster learners than others. It is very important, especially
My desire to become a teacher began while I was in junior high school however; my family, friends, and coaches basically turned me against it. They said it was a jobless market with no future. At that age, those people were very impressionable on my decisions, and because of this I became disillusioned about my career, and at that point I just knew I wanted to attend college.
One of the important topics in school, Social Studies, is talked about not being taught anymore. Social Studies should be taught to inform our children about our history. Social Studies teaches about our past and who we are. For example, In the book The Giver, Jonas doesn't know about his past he just thinks that the only time that exists is now. If Social Studies isn't educated to kids they will be like Jonas, but if they are educated about our History they will know about their ancestors and how the world came to be.
Knowledge is a very powerful thing, and to be able to deliver this to today’s youth has been a dream of mine for a long time. There are many advantages to teaching. I feel that is a very fulfilling profession. I have seen my sister in the classroom, and it greatly inspired me to want to make a difference in some ones life. Through watching my sister in action I was inspired to follow in her footsteps.
I’ve always believed very strongly in hard work, perseverance, strong moral character. These traits to me are what exemplifies a superior teacher that has the privilege to touch many lives and change the world we live in.
I have always leaned toward the profession of education. I feel that a career in education has much to offer, both personally and professionally. The idea of any other career has never been a question; as a child, and now as an adult, I have always known that my interest lay in teaching.
For the past seven years, I have had the same dream - to someday be a high school math teacher. I am finally on my way to turning that dream into a reality. Along the way, I am learning a lot of things and forming a number of opinions. One of the main areas in which I am forming new beliefs is in relation to what methods I will use in teaching my class and what aspects of what philosophies I will employ. First of all, however, I must reach the point where I have a class to teach.
Public education has many purposes in contemporary society. One purpose should be to teach kids basic skills that they need throughout life; this includes basic math, reading, writing. Along with this on a broader level I believe that schools should teach children to have a growth mindset. A growth mindset is important for everyone to have throughout life as it will allow them to be more open to new experiences and it will teach them to question what they are told. The ability to question the status quo is what allows people to express themselves and their ideas, it prevents people from being oppressed. Finally I believe that public education should teach kids to be excited about learning. Kids should not dread going to school, instead it should be a positive experience and kids should understand that learning happens throughout life and does not stop after K-12 education. To instill a love for learning is to ensure that children become lifelong learners. Public schools in the US today have strikingly different purposes than these but I believe that if these were to become our purposes then we would have a more educated and more aware society.
First of all, learning has the primal roles of education, such as informing and motivating. In this part, educators are supposed to concentrate on how to get student’s attention or interest it because learning works as a bridge to students and make them keep on studying. Jay Mathews reports certain approaching at History class of Cardozo high school is “the historical approach to history teaching, questioning documents and analyzing ideas as historians do.” (“Delving into”, ). Arthur H. Camins claims one of some elements which should be happened in the classroom, “Ask questions about phenomenon (causes of cancer, climate change) and define problems that need to be solved (designing cancer treatment drugs, low-impact energy generation)”(“the purpose of education”). Both of cases uses actual event. It reduces student’s friction for learning.
In its truest form, I believe the main purpose of education should be to promote socialization. Socialization refers to the act of inheriting and spreading standards, customs and ideologies, providing an individual with the skills and habits necessary for contributing in society. Socialization is therefore the way that social and cultural continuity are attained (“Socialization,”n.d., para.1). Learning about Social Studies is a subject that contains a lot of important information and details. Social Studies is associated with the past, present, and future. Most important every student should have the opportunity to learn about the past, present, and future. It doesn’t matter if the student is in a Special, General or an integrated class, they all have the privilege to learn and find out information that they can relate, define, and learn. “Social studies learners range from gifted students who can read George Washington’s farewell address to struggling readers who have difficulty reading the words to “America, the Beautiful”(Pg.9) These contexts are something that students need to be exposed too as well understand the concept of it. “Our role as teachers is to help students become good citizens by making informed decision (Pg.9). This is why it’s important for teachers to have a well develop idea in all subjects. It is important for teachers to be able to promote learning and providing students with the education deserved.
