School Governors - School governors are elected to the governing board for a maximum 4 year term, which is renewable. There are different types of governors; parent governors, staff governors, community governors to name a few.
The strategic purpose of the governing board is to work together with the Head Teacher to ensure that the school is providing a good quality education for all pupils. In doing this they are responsible for appointing the Head Teacher, setting the school aims and assisting in planning future direction. Putting robust policies in place to be followed and implemented by the head teacher who is responsible for the day to day management of the school. SENCO - The Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) is one of the statutory roles in schools. They are responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of the school’s Special Educational Needs (SEN)policy by providing guidance and training to colleagues and liaising with professional outside of school to find further support if needed. They are not only responsible for a high quality teaching for SEN pupils but also take care of their records and keep in touch with their parents.
Teachers - The strategic role of teachers is in following and meeting the aims, policies and procedures put in place by school governors, and the senior management team. There role is to plan, prepare and deliver good quality learning following the curriculum outlined either the national curriculum or that agreed by the school to ensure that the needs of the pupils are met. They have to record pupil development with the help of marked assignments, monitor each child’s individual progress and recognise any issues or problems and take steps to address
the same approach to running education. School governors have a large say of this. They do not need any special qualifications or experience; however it is most important for the governor to have certain qualities such as an interested in the welfare of the children and the school and to be prepared to give their time and effort when required. They tend to meet once or twice per term and discuss the school the business such as things like finance and curriculum issues. It is expected that they make 1 visit per year to school during the day and attend at least one training day per year as well. All governors undergo a CRB check, they can also claim for expenses such as travelling to meetings, training days and in some cases childcare. They usually hold the post for 4 years. The role of the SENCo has developed through government policy and undergone significant changes in the past decade with the introduction of the statutory SEN Code of Practice 2001 which states that the role of the SENCo includes identifying and placing pupils in need of special educational provision on a graduated system, liaising with parents and other professionals in regards to children with SEND and advising and supporting other practitioners in the field amongst other responsibilities.
This act required the code of practice be introduced for guidance on identification and provision of special educational needs. The role of the SENCO was introduced in schools and parents were able to challenge local authorities about providing for pupils with SEN.
