The book”Winter Chance Walking in Wolf Tracks” by Ron Gamer is a great book on how it ties to the environment. This boy 14 years old goes out on a ice fishing and camping trip overnight and gets lost he forgot to pack his food so he has none. His friend Seth works hard to try and find him. In this book and in real life it is very important to preserve the land around you and to protect our animal species and not be a poacher.. It is very important to stay on the trail during snowmobiling so then you don't hurt anything under or above the snow. If there is a baby pine tree growing then you run it over it with the track of the sled it could kill the tree. Maybe a farmer is planting winter rye and wants you to stay off from it so then this
The setting of the short story “Hunters in the Snow” by Tobias Wolff has significant importance in relation to the theme. The bitterly cold and snowy weather of Spokane, Washington illustrates the coldness and the tension between the three friends, Frank, Kenny, and Tub and helps unlock the theme of the story. The theme is to be respectful and selfless within friendships.
Each and everyone of you in this classroom has a strong awareness to the dangers wildlife habitats face everyday, but we don’t do anything about it. Why? I feel the answer is obvious for most, “...we are to busy with life...” or “...I couldn’t make a difference...” both of these assumptions are the wrong outlook to take. With just these few changes in your everyday life you could help. You could start recycling, make your
Growing up in Switzerland and Oregon, I learned that nature is greatly valued and it is necessary to respect the environment to prevent impending environmental collapse. Living in a society whose morals and ethics include
When people are on winter break, most want to go out and play in the snow, but who knew that the snow could be one's worst nightmare when stubbornness comes into play. Most people go out on an enjoyable snow-white day to sled down snowy hills and fling semi-hard snowballs at each other. No one would think that maybe sledding down the snowy hills could be so dangerous when they are having fun, and trying to show off. I certainly did not think that it was dangerous, but boy was I so wrong. Normally being a Los Angeles girl, going up to Big Bear is such an amazing experience, because down in the Los Angeles region it does not snow at all. However, I was not ready to face what was slowly going to change me in the mountains of California.
An additional technique used by authors to motivate readers to treat the environment well is using fictional works to get their message across. A well-known example of this is The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. When you read this story as a kid, you may not realize that the story intentionally mirrors our world today, but eventually you realize that it isn’t just about truffalump trees being cut down; it’s about real ones: pine trees and oaks and sycamores, to name a few. The humming fish mentioned in the story may not exist in real life, but we are harming actual fish by polluting our rivers with dangerous
While true friendship can weather the storm, superficial friendships can change with the seasons. In the short story “Hunters in the Snow” by Tobias Wolff, a trio of men go on a hunting trip in the snow that ends abruptly when Tub shoots Kenny and they have to drive to the hospital. On their way there, Frank and Tub stop a few times, and they begin to talk and learn more about each other, all the time becoming less concerned with Kenny. These talks bring them closer while the snow outside dies away. The snowy setting is a symbol for being cold and distant to one another, drawing attention to the message that superficial relationships are not as strong as real ones.

In the short story Hunters in the snow the hierarchy is based on who has the most dirt on each other, once secrets are exchanged between the group the hierarchy slowly falls and power shifts. In Hunters in the snow it is obvious that the leader of the group is Kenny. The reason being is that Kenny knows all the secrets the other two have. Kenny use’s his knowledge to bully and control Tub and Frank. Later during the story Tub take initiative and decides too shoot Kenny; this is a turning part in the story and leads to the later shift in power.
“A walk in the Woods” is the story of two men setting out on the AT trail. They come across what not only they are missing but the disconnect in nature. The book helps to expand on what aspects are missing from our culture in order to incorporate nature in our daily life.
The book “The Grizzly Maze” by author Nick Jans, tells the fatal story of a man known as Timothy Treadwell and his dark obsession with bears and the wilderness. Timothy is a self proclaimed “Bear Expert” who devoted his life to protecting Grizzly bears from the dangers of poaching. He began to research bears on his own and began to spread his “knowledge” to thousands of people through books, media, and even as a classroom speaker. He wanted to protect the grizzlies so much that he even went as far as to camp in the wilderness of Katmai National Park and protect them physically from the threats of poachers/hunters, a threat that was never a reality. He garnered large media attention for the way he handled his “research”, since it was so
As such, the lack of determination to preserve natural resources has enormously affected the environment, precisely animals and other life sources; for instance, minerals, forest, and fertile land that frequently occurs more often than not for economic gains. This is a situation that has been forgotten and ignored by public and elected officials due to profit and their reelection campaign funds. Because of corporate greediness, this issue has effected the environment and of course they are more focus on short term profit instead of the damaged that are being done and the long term impact on the environment. The wilderness is under assault and is being diminished due to lack of governmental oversight. Another example in “The Call of the Wild” poem by Gary Snyder, the author emphasizes how humankind
Chapters three and four of Wolf Tracks, argues that despite the cultural elites dismissing the black influence on Panama and ignoring its significance in the mid-twentieth century to the early twenty-first century, they still relate the work to represent Panamanian culture, all while the black society attempts to shatter the false allegations that they do not exist in the idea of mestizaje. African art takes on a theatrical form in the shape of the red devil buses that contradict the old traditions of the ideas of mestizaje and order. The paintings drawn by Salazar, Garcia, Gaskin, Camargo, and Villarue, confirm the notion that the black influence is taking charge and trying to break down barriers by forcing everyone to experience and interact
In 1949, Aldo Leopold published the book “A Sand County Almanac”, a book which written as a firsthand explanation of the natural resources and beauties that the Earth has to offer. This book dives into the issues surrounding the disregard for natural wildlife and the need for conservation in order for the natural world to progress and keep thriving. Leopold also talks about different seasons and the beauty of individual animals he comes across, and how their survival is a feat in itself. The importance of environmental conservation and the need to treat nature with care is a vibrant concept that will be explained throughout this paper, as well. This accounting of “A Sand County Almanac” will accurately describe
Elizabeth Kolbert wrote the 2015 Pulitzer prize-winning book in the creative nonfiction genre, The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History. Ms. Kolbert’s book used the resources she has accumulated through years working in journalism to produce a well researched book about the science of the environmental change we are currently experiencing. I want this on my reading list because it serves as an inspiration. The book I want to write is less backed up by personal hands on research but more a collection of persuasive essay’s guiding readers to wiser, more conscious behavior choices. Nonetheless her writing is tight, journalistic and persuasive without
Everyday people all over the world try to improve the qualities of their lives. Nonetheless, they forget that what they do can have severe harms and damages on the environment and other organisms. In the excerpt “A Fable for Tomorrow” from the book Silent Spring, Rachel Carson describes the disastrous and horrific effects of pesticides on the environment and animals of the town. In the essay “Our Animal Rites” by Anna Quindlen, she shows the inhumanity of animal hunting by human. Furthermore, she argues how human migration is destroying the natural habitats that belong to the animals. In the excerpt “Reading the River” from the autobiographical book Life on Mississippi, Mark Twain describes how he loses the ability to perceive the
