I believe that the main cause of the civil war was the different economies and societies of the United States. I think that this was the most influential cause of the civil war because it divided the United States and further separated the north from the south. The reason why I believe that the difference in economies was the major cause of the civil war was because there are no other reasons that are as significant. The issue of states’ rights was not a significant issue because it did not separate the north and south as much as the differences of economies actually did.
The main differences in the societies of the northern and southern United States were their economies. The north had an industrial based economy while the south had more of an agriculture based economy. Although the north had some farming, there was not as much farming as there were in the south. The north’s economy relied on industries, such as textile mills, that manufactures goods and traded both nationally and internationally. The south however relied solely on farming. The south relied on slaves to help on the large plantations. Southerners often specialized in certain crops, such as tobacco or cotton. These differences in economies were very influential in the separation of the United States and lead to the Civil War. The differences of economies between the north and south were important and led to civil war because it separated the north and south. The problem behind the different economies was the different interests that the north and south had. The north wanted to pass tariffs and tax imports from Europe to help American businesses, such as industries.
