The Global Warming Debate On Our World

The globe is being rocked by extreme weather and the hottest temperatures on record. As the average global temperature soars, there are floods, droughts, unusually cold winters, forest fires, and huge storms. Are all of these horrors being caused by human-induced global warming?

Global warming is hot topic nowadays. Alarmists and scientists fight to make their statements known, but while the alarmists avoid the scientist, non-governmental organizations pass themselves as scientist. They not only give out exaggerated data, they also have the nerve to accuse humans of being the cause of global warming. Also, we cannot be certain that we are being told the truth without knowing exactly what is really going on behind the scenes. We blindly trust those in authority because we think that they have our greater good in mind and that whatever they say must be the truth.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change not only reported about the occurrence of global warming, but also stated that it is caused by human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels. The Gallup poll has tracked the views of Americans on this issue since the year 2001 and it has been consistent. Fewer people who were surveyed in 2008 said that global warming is due to human activities than natural causes, than people who were surveyed back in 2001. Republicans’ belief in human-caused global warming has decreased from 2001 to 2008 while the Democrats’ belief has risen in the same period of time (Dunlap&McCright, 2008, pg 29).

Critically assess how the media have used the scientific evidence in the debate around the climate change, and its causes and/or effects

Polar bears sweating, the Earth reforming into a volcano, and oxygen artificially supplied to the atmosphere is the future of tomorrow. It is unfortunately a consequence of our activities today. Global warming is an extremely adverse word and a great deal of controversy. It is all an interconnected process of globalization, hence having human activities cause global warming and destruction of the environment.

Throughout history climates have drastically changed. There have been shifts from warm climates to the Ice Ages (Cunningham & Cunningham, 2009, p.204). Evidence suggests there have been at least a dozen abrupt climate changes throughout the history of the earth. There are a few suspected reasons for these past climate changes. One reason may be that asteroids hitting the earth and volcanic eruptions caused some of them. A further assumption is that 22-year solar magnetic cycles and 11-year sunspot cycles played a part in the changes. A further possibility is that a regular shifting in the angle of the moon orbiting earth causing changing tides and atmospheric circulation affects the global climate (Cunningham & Cunningham, 2009,

Mike Huckabee; the former governor of Arkansas, said: “The most important thing about global warming is this. Whether humans are responsible for the bulk of climate change is going to be left to the scientists, but it’s all of our responsibility to leave this planet in better shape for the future generations than we found it.” This addresses the controversy over climate change; even though many people support and advocate for taking immediate action to reduce the large footprint humans have made on the Earth, there’s just as many or more that are unwilling to do anything because whatever happens won’t occur in the current day, but instead years later. Climate change has been a topic of debate for decades. Scientists support climate change is happening with hard scientific evidence whereas the people who oppose climate change have evidence which is mainly opinion-based. This report will cover what climate change is, why climate change is happening, the science that supports climate change, the different views and opinions on climate change, the effects of climate change around the world and particularly the effects in New Zealand, my opinion on climate change and my conclusion on the issue.

Climate change is a global issue that is under an endless debate for its causes. The increase in the global mean annual surface air temperature in the previous century by 0.75C (IPCC 2007) in coincidence with the excess of the carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in the atmosphere from 289 to 353 ppm (Lean et al. 1995) by burning fossil fuels support the human-induced hypothesis of climate change. On the other hand, the protestors of the natural origin of climate change build their argument on the variations of solar radiation and volcanic activities (Rind and Overpeck 1993). Meehl et al. Climate change has been a widely debated, controversial topic. Some think that it is not an issue that should be payed much attention to. With climate changing being caused naturally and by humans, the climate has been widely changing due to ample amounts of CO2 emissions. Where the burning of fossil fuels is the main source of the human impact. As well as volcanoes being a majority the of natural emissions. Although nature contributes to the climate change humans have more widely contributed to the change of climate abroad.

There is an issue on this planet that will define this generation. The issue is climate change. Global warming. A world on the collapse as our oceans are acidified, our air polluted, our forests disappearing, and human rights issues getting worse. It seems that people are not aware of how big climate change actually is. It’s not something that only takes place on the ice caps or in the forests on the far corners of the world. This is an issue that happens here, and now. It’s real. It’s happening.

Global warming is a huge concern in society that is only growing bigger because people either are not well informed about it, or they are not concerned about it. Some think that it will just go away and others still believe that it doesn’t exist, even though there is hundreds if not thousands of pieces of evidence that supports otherwise. One of the biggest pieces of evidence that proves global warming is real is the effect that photosynthesis has on global warming.

However, it is only in the past few decades that research has revealed that humans have a significant influence on the climate as well. A growing body of scientific evidence indicates that since 1950, the world’s climate has been warming, primarily as a result of emissions from the burning of fossil fuels and the destruction of tropical forests. Natural and anthropogenic substances like green house gases that alter earth’s energy budget are drivers of climate change. Radiative forcing (RF) quantifies the change in energy fluxes caused by changes in these drivers and positive RF leads to surface warming. The largest contribution to total RF is caused by the increase in the atmospheric concentration of CO2 (1.68 W m-2) followed by CH4, Halo-carbons and N2O since 1750 (IPCC 2013). According to IPCC 2013 the CO2 concentrations will raise unprecedentedly from 391 Parts per million (p.p.m) in 2011 to 550–700 p.p.m. by 2050 and to 670–936 by 2100. Ironically, most of the CO2 is mitigated by plants with photosynthetic reaction that converts solar energy into energy stored in carbohydrates. A lot of research has been done through last few decades, to investigate elevated CO2 induced changes in plants and to identify potential candidate tree species that sequester more CO2 under elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 enhances photosynthetic rate, reduces stomatal conductance resulting in a higher amount of plant mass and yield.

The issue of global warming should be on the list of our top priorities. Studies show that the average of global temperatures have risen since the Industrial Revolution began. Since the Industrial Revolution, human emissions has quadrupled the frequency of certain heat extremes and many scientists have warned that a failure to bring greenhouse gases under control could eventually lead to a 62-fold increase in extreme heat blasts (Gillis Justin A17). Most of the increase is due to human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. These activities contribute to a build-up in carbon dioxide and other gases in Earth’s atmosphere. The Earth’s atmosphere is made of gases like nitrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen. These gases act as a blanket that covers and gives us warmth, but once these gases such as carbon dioxide absorbs heat, but does not release it back into space in which causes the increase in global temperature. This is called the greenhouse effect because it only traps heat but does not release it.
