Growing up in a big family can be tough some days, although I would not have it any other way. My mom has four siblings and my dad has five, blessing me with over twenty first cousins and an extended family that is too large to count. I was also fortunate enough to have both sets of grandparents and several great grandparents as an active part of my life. According to the dictionary family is a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household. Or family is from the descendants of a common ancestor. According to society family is a group, it can be related are not. My definition of family is anyone who is there for you through good and bad, someone who always have your back no matter what. Family is not just blood. However some of the best families are the ones you are not related to.

What is family? It is defined as “a group of people related to one another by blood or marriage.” Three acclaimed authors: Shakespeare, Pope and Eliot, identify family in many different ways, some that are similar and some that are different from each other. To clearly understand how they all variously define family you need to dive deep into the context of their works. A couple of the authors use a textbook example of family and others create their own idea of the concept.

The concept of a family in today’s society, is often misunderstood. Some people see family as the people they live with, while others see it as blood relatives. The google definition of a family is “a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household.”, but today this is not always the case. Family is simply a group of people, or individuals that have a common bond and love and support each other, whether they are related by blood or not.

There is more than one way to define family. My meaning of family is a group of people no matter ancestry or marriage who genuinely supports one another. C. Joybell C. stated, “Family is family, and is not determined by marriage certificates, divorce papers, and adoption documents. Families are made in the heart.”

My personal definition of family is: A group of people, related or not who love each other but may not always like each other, they support each other, they are loyal, they dish out tough love at times and sit next to you at holiday dinners with other relatives I’d classify as intolerable.

Family has so many different meanings to every individual who has answers this question. Trying to find a general definition for this term is impossible. Everyone has a different concept of what a family is, what I would consider my family is far more stretch than a typical American family. Coming from a Latin culture my family’s considered grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, friends and down to the last pet. I experienced culture shock when I entered middle school to see what some of my when they referred to family they meant just their parents. The Dictionary definition of family is “A group consisting of parents and children living together in a household.” My definition of family is people with an unconditional love for each other. My family and I have always been very close. For example, we share all of our secrets with each other. Since I can remember, my family and I have always went on a family beach trip to Panama City Beach. We stay at the Shores of Panama, a very nice resort, and the people who own it expect us every year. We always take our beach trip in early September. The reason they decided on September is because it is the beginning of fall which means it will be warm instead of hot. I look forward to going to the beach with my family every year because it is relaxing, fun, and all about family time which I love.

For me and most of my classmate, family can be people whom we are related to most times by blood and are present in our lives and supports us. I know this definition is not only flawed but dismissive and cliche because that definition only represent some certain kind of family and not all of them. Google and co might give us a concrete definition of a family but in actuality that definition is flawed because, there isn't any one way to define family but rather the definition of family is drawn by what is not only happening to us but around us and most importantly the advancement of the community/society we live

Whenever a person hears the word family, they think about a group of individuals related by blood. Family is not just blood related, life-long friends, a sports team, and school organizations are considered family as well. Growing up in a small town has caused me to get to know everyone and I have created many friendships with my classmates. I may have multiple friends, but there are only a few that I have close relationships with and consider them as part of my family.
