Unit 209: Support children and young people’s positive behaviour. Assignment 1: Supporting positive behaviour. Assessment criteria: 1.2, 2.1,3.2 This assignment will look at supporting positive behaviour. I will begin by looking at why consistency is important when dealing with behaviour and applying boundaries and rules. I will include some examples of these rules and boundaries in accordance with school policy and procedure I will also detail the benefits of rewarding positive behaviour. I will finish by giving examples of the types of behaviour that should be referred on to others. A teaching assistant will be able to deal with many situations where a pupil requires a reprimand or sanction of some description for their actions and behaviour. For example, minor conflicts between pupils, not listening to instructions, talking in class or poor manners. However there are also instances where a pupil’s inappropriate behaviour needs to be referred on to someone else. If the teaching assistant has spoken to the same pupil(s) several times about the same behaviour, has even taken the step of taking away house points from the pupil, yet they still continue with the same behaviour; the pupil should at this stage be referred on to the class teacher. The class teacher should be referred to straightaway in the instance of a pupil swearing at other pupils or at members of staff; or if pupils have been fighting (physically) with one another. Depending on the severity of the fighting and the swearing it may be necessary to refer the behaviour on to the Head teacher. Instances of bullying should always be referred directly on to the Head teacher. If a pupil’s behaviour is consistently disruptive and inappropriate the Head teacher in my school would implement a traffic light system to encourage behaviour to improve. However, if no improvement is seen it may be necessary for the Head, in consultation with the
