Cell phones have been proven to be a distraction to people young and old but mostly in teenagers. Driving while distracted is a factor in at least 25% of all car accidents (Nationwide). Teenagers and adults alike believe that they can multitask and text while driving. It is easily possible for your eyes to slip off the road. Therefore, instead of your eyes locking in on your phone they should be locked on watching your speed, the road, and the traffic. At the same time, while

It is sad to think that people cannot wait to text their friends back and they have to do it during driving on the roads.

From distraction.gov states the from 2011 to 2014 the number of drivers that own cellphone went from fifty-two percent to eighty percent. Basically meaning people that have accidents mainly come from texting and driving. So that is a big problem and percentage to come from fifty-two to eight. Not paying attention will do, cause there’s a lot of that in today’s world. It’s so bad today with society that even if u not in a car you can get hit by not looking where your going. So this need to be stopped or controlled.

When your in a car what is it that your focus should be on: your car, the cars of others, the road, watching out for pedestrians, or watching for lights and signs? Well driving is all those thing put together and to add a phone to the mix is to many things for a single person to concentrate on. Some state have made it illegal for people to drive while using a hand held device and, I believe that is the right decision because while people are on their phones while driving they can: run into other car or hit pedestrians. Have you ever seen a car that's run a stop sign or light? Chances are you have and some of those times people are running late for something and don't notice it but i bet most times its because a person was too busy talking on their phone or even texting.

Despite an effective way of communication, using cell phones during driving results in the distracted attention of driver increasing road safety concerns.

Not only does using a cell phone while driving put the driver in danger, but it also puts other drivers in danger because it can be distracting.”Distracted driving affects all drivers from time to time and can come with stiff consequences,”(Delbridge). This shows that one is not only putting themselves in danger, but they are putting other drivers at risk as well.Thousands of people have been affected by these distracted drivers and have been injured. “About 424,000 people were injured in crashes involving a distracted driver,”(edgarsnyder.com 2018). This is just a small example of how many people who have been affected and this also shows how some of the other drivers are affected.

Using a cell phone while driving has become the biggest manual distraction while driving.  According to a study, conducted by The University of Utah (2013),

Some states have now made it illegal to drive while using a hand-held cell phone. Some people believe that states should not make it illegal to drive when using a cell phone. They argue that cell phones may be more resourceful and less distracting while driving. States should make it illegal to drive while using a cell phone. Driving with a cell phone can cause accidents, be distracting, can be tempting, and can cause loss of control of one's vehicle. Using a cell phone while driving can cause accidents. My friend, Chelsea, had an accident while using her cell phone. She was texting her mom about coming home and did not see the tractor trailor approaching her. She was hit by the tractor trailor and was in the hospital for two weeks

Do you use your cell phone while you drive? No? Good. Most people who do are well aware of the consequences, but think that they would never happen to them. Our reliance on these little devices has led to a rise in use by drivers, increasing the risk of car accidents and fatalities immensely. The main concerns which puts us at jeopardy are drivers having to take their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel, in order to efficiently text, dial, change a song, etc. Also, people can be so consumed in what they are communicating that they lose their focus on driving, disabling them from driving effectively. Ever since the creation of portable technology, people have found a way to distract themselves from the responsibilities of safely operating a vehicle. The first distractions while driving a vehicle began with something as simple as the car radio. As technology progressed, the devices became more complex and required more attention to operate them. Recently, the biggest distraction for drivers is using smartphones to send text messages or to interact with others through social media. People fail to realize the dangers that are associated with distracted driving. The Department of Transportation reported 100,917 distracted driving crashes in 2014, resulting in 483 fatalities and more than 3,000 serious injuries. Compared with 2013, distracted-driving crashes in Texas have increased by 6 percent (“Cell Phone” 2008). The broad meaning of the phrase, distracted driving is any activity that could divert a driver’s attention while operating a vehicle. My paper will focus solely on distracted driving while using a handheld electronic device.
