Allowing for our ethical codes of conduct, if the client is someone we feel we can proceed with, then as always, the first stage would be to develop a good rapport and gain the clients trust to develop an honest and open relationship with them. The client centred approach as always is the best method for this – to put the client at ease in a non-judgemental space where they can express their emotions and explore what it is they want to achieve with therapy. In giving the therapist an 3. overview of their lives and feelings, the therapist will get an insight into what the client is going through and a little of what brought them to their presenting issue. It is important at an early stage to make the client feel that there is hope and light at the end of the tunnel – without making unrealistic promises that cannot be reached. The therapist needs to make the client feel they are in safe hands and that they are being listened to and really heard. A potentially suicidal client should not leave a therapy session feeling worse than when they arrived, yet at the same time, the client needs to know that they may have to go through some difficult times in order to start to heal
Helping the client overcome their fears about counseling is the first step in facilitating a healthy relationship. Setting the expectations of the (CRI) is essential so that the client has a clear understanding of the process. It is also the responsibility of the skilled professional to provide feedback and maintain open lines of communication to avoid any confusion the client may exhibit. Skilled professionals must exhibit passion, present a warm-hearted friendly and affectionate manner and be empathetic to the clients’ needs. The objective in administering the (CRI) is to support the clients’ situation by exploring the reasons that have caused the client to feel the way they do. Exploring the lives of the client through actively communicating with those seeking treatment will provide the necessary information in which can be applied to providing alternative measures of treatment to individuals. Utilizing the proper interventions is crucial in order to provide the proper treatment plan. Intervention is the focus in any helping relationship and is usually determined based on the skilled professionals focusing on something that exists in the life of the client. “Focusing on what may be present or something that the client has not paid full attention to or something that the client is not yet aware of yet are all essential
In order for the counseling process to be effective for the client the characteristics and behaviors of the mental health counselor must be effective. To be an effective mental health counselor the process must include both the art and science of helping clients when they struggle. This paper will address both effective and ineffective characteristics of the given transcript along with an explanation of how a counselor’s characteristics or behaviors influence a session with a client.
Client-centered therapy: An approach to counseling where the client determines the general direction of therapy, while the therapist seeks to increase the client's insightful self-understanding through informal simplified questions. The client is the focal point of the sessions, the therapist takes a "back seat" to learn about the person, and watch as the client moves toward the achievement of their full potential through creativity.
To begin with, of the therapist/counselor is to apply a vast area of methods when dealing with clients, by providing them with the necessary tools using various existential-humanistic approaches. The reason is that there are no two people alike in the world. With this in mind, people’s problems, beliefs thought process, and their ‘here and now’ is a representation of our individuality and how each of us handle things. Therefore, when a person comes to see a therapist, it is important for that therapist to be able to help and address their issues, in the best way possible. This involves, the therapist/counselor to be knowledgeable, with various
The therapist is also responsible for protecting the client from harm when the client has expressed suicidal ideations. More steps and precautions are needed in order to ensure the safety of the client. In a suicidal case, the therapist would need to contact 911 when necessary, to make sure that the client gets help as soon as possible.
There are a multitude of factors that a therapist must consider during the initial consultation. I will describe the actual mechanics of the consultation, the ethical considerations facing the therapist and the particular challenges of the actual consultation itself.
The major theoretical perspectives provide a framework for understanding and conceptualizing client’s current mental health issues and the potential contributory factors in the development of their problems. The present client, Toni Barone, is seeking treatment for her current unhappiness with her life, social isolation, and bereavement issues stemming from her father’s death.
It is very important to build a strong theoretical orientation when dealing with different clients, due to the fact they are all different. Many different cultural norms, and different reasons for being there. The professional must bear in mind the different boundaries of others, and their own boundaries are essentials. Depending on who is the counselor many theoretical influences would be different in handling their clients, and whatever is comfortable for the professional, and what the client’s situation is would bear on how the treatment solution plan would be devised (Psychcentral, 2016). You probably could find many types of theoretical orientations that professional use today. Establishing theoretical orientation will help you to provide
The responsibility a counselor must have to their client, is to help the person leave treatment in better frame of mind then when they arrived. Although, often the person will experience feelings and emotions they may have suppressed so it may get worse prior to getting better. Therefore, our primary goal is to cause no harm to the people we are working with. It is the counselor’s responsibility to provide a safe environment for the client and counselor can build a confidential therapeutic relationship. Therefore, allowing the person to have the trust and confidence in the counselor that they can disclose their innermost personal details of their live knowing they are in good hands. Although, there are numerous disorders people may be seeking help for, therefore, the counselor is required to know exactly what they are competent in treating, and have resources available for issues they are not qualified to
“what factors would a therapist take into account when planning treatment for a psychologically abused client”
I found that I need to make improvements in many respects. First, I need to improve my opening statement to make it more clearly and smoothly and give my client an open question to encourage her to talk about her issue. Moreover, I need to make an improvement on identifying specific emotions that clients are feeling. In this session, I failed to use “feeling” vocabulary to reflect her feelings and create an empathic environment. In addition, I need to learn not to let my own experience and judgement influence the helping process. For example, when my client was talking about how smoking habit took away her studying time, I was thinking, “exactly, bad habits always influence many students’ academic performance in a negative way.” Although I did not say it, I wanted to say this to help her feel accepted and understood. This may not what she was thinking, but I was thinking it because I have experienced it before. To effectively help people explore themselves, I should make an improvement in these

information regarding that client and their concerns, from there you can create a specific treatment
Therapists need to engage in collaborative dialogue with clients to understand their preferences about what worked or did not work, for them previously, in order to help resolve their issues and move forward (Cooper & McLeod, 2011). Collaborative assessment and case formulation, which allows clients and therapists to work collaboratively to understand how clients presenting issues can inform interventions, are ongoing (Kuyken, Padesky & Dudley, 2008) and enable therapists to reach clients in their own world, from which growth and change can ensue. Collaborative assessment is therapeutic as it helps clients focus on the impact of certain behaviour which can lead to insight and therapists can use their own life experiences and current perceptions
