Many schools require preschool teachers to have a Bachelor’s degree, depending on the state and area. Subjects that would be required for this degree range from Liberal Arts, English, History, Science, Nutrition, Child Development, Psychology of the Young Child, and Sociology. Certifications and/or licensing are required in certain states or areas (“Preschool”). I believe that all of these recommended courses are of great benefit to a person who aspires to be a preschool teacher. I think that it is just as important to have the background in the studies that will be taught as it is to have the background in creative skills. Young children need an equal mix of both skills to develop and progress as they should. I am a strong advocate for required certifications/licensing. I trust that parents of young children want the absolute best for them. Most parents seek to enroll their children in a licensed school with certified and highly experienced teachers. Preschools that are licensed and employ certified teachers exemplify a high standard of care. This provides parents with a level of confidence when enrolling their children in these settings. Doing field experience at St.Mary’s Preschool has taught me a lot not only about the educational system but about myself as well. An elementary educator also needs to have a wide personality. By “wide” I mean they should be prepared to multitask, learn not to get distracted easily and really know how to connect with children. There are multiple characteristics needed going into this field. Going into preschool teaching could be a bit overwhelming, having to deal with kids with little to no filter, maximum energy levels, and them not understanding the difference between play time and work time. When I went to NAEYC conference, Nov 18-Nov 21, Orlando, Florida, I attended 4 session. One of them was “America’s Best and Brightest: New Market Research on Attracting and Retaining Early Childhood Professionals.” Because I lack English listening skills, I couldn’t understand whole contents. However, I came to know about ‘understanding the attitudes and beliefs of current educators about the profession’ and ‘identifying factors that will be most helpful in encouraging educators to make the field a long-term profession.’ I thought that these contents would be useful and helpful for our classmates, as well as me, in understanding “current preschool teacher in the United States.”
