Proclaimed as the hottest company since Google and Facebook, Twitter introduced a revolutionary micro-blogging service in 2006 that allowed users to spread and share short messages of 140 characters (“tweets”) with friends and strangers subscribing to follow their communication flow (as so called “followers”) in order to find out what is happening right now from any point of the globe.

McDonald’s biggest competitor on social media at the moment is Taco Bell, who have two twitter accounts. The main account is @TacoBell who have 1.64 million followers, are following 16 people, and have tweeted 527 thousand times. The secondary account for their customer service team is @TacoBellTeam and have tweeted 8,780 people, are following 327 people, and have 5,164 followers. Taco Bell’s official Facebook page have 10,291,405 likes. From the number of followers, following, and tweets, one can tell that McDonald’s is above Taco Bell on 2 of the social media sites.

Tweet hast tag social media makes me happy. From Facebook to Twitter, social media has made us more densely networked than ever before. We live in a world where digital devices have made it easier for us to be connected to loads of people all the time. Every day, we’re habitually texting, online checking email, and scrolling our social media accounts. A study reported that 52% of students use internet 2 to 6 hours daily, 90% use social networking sites, 93% send or receive an email, and 23% said they send over 100 text messages per day (Doyle). Social media has made it accessible for us to engage with others without meeting them in person. Damaging effects of online socialization have been well-documented; nevertheless, these endless studies play on people’s anxieties, insecurities, and ultimately their happiness. Experts have been arguing that social media is disconnecting us from the bigger picture by making us anti-social and depressed. Ethan Kross, a social psychologist and the lead author of a University of Michigan study, found that “the more often people used Facebook, the more their moods dropped” (Kross). On a positive note, social media is a tool that can generate happiness and virtually deliver joy across the globe to billions of people.
