Chapter 1, Problem 1.7P

The drag on the hull of a ship depends in part on the height of the water waves produced by the hull. The potential energy associated with these waves therefore depends on the acceleration of gravity g. Hence, we can state that the wave drag on the hull is D = f ( ρ , V , c , g ) where c is a length scale associated with the hull, say, the maximum width of the hull. Define the drag coefficient as C D K D / q c 2 . Also, define a similarity parameter called the Frnude number, F r = V / g c . Using Buckingham’s pi theorem, prove that C D = f ( Fr ) .

A stationary object in a flow of speed 27 m/s produces a drag force of 13 N. The flow speed is then changed to 25 m/s. What will be the drag force if the Drag Coefficient and density are assumed constant? Give your answer in Newtons to 2 decimal places.
A ship 200 f t long with a wetted area of 5000 ft2 moves at 25 ft/s. Find the friction drag, assuming that the ship surface may be modeled as a flat plate, and ρ = 1.94 slugs/ft3 and ν = 1.2 × 10−5 ft2/s. What is the minimum power required to move the ship at this speed?
To good approximation, the thermal conductivity k of a gasdepends only on the density ρ ,mean free path l , gas constant R , and absolute temperatureT . For air at 20 8 C and 1 atm, k ≈0.026 W/(m.K) and l ≈6.5 E-8 m. Use this information to determine k for hydrogenat 20 ° C and 1 atm if l ≈ 1.2 E-7 m.
