Chapter 1, Problem 3CSL
Summary Introduction
To explain:
The imaging techniques that would be best to determine whether a tumor exists and which technique would be inadequate for determining the placement of the tumor.
Concept introduction:
Healthcare professionals use sophisticated medical imaging techniques to visualize the structures of the internal body. Some common techniques include sonography, radiography, dynamic spatial reconstruction, computed tomography, digital subtraction angiography, positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Dominic’s doctors strongly suspect he has a tumor in his brain. Which of the following medical imaging techniques—conventional X-ray imaging, angiography, PET, sonography, or MRI— would probably be best for precisely locating the tumor?
] Mr. X, aged 85, was recently diagnosed with a particular type of brain tumor and was referred to Dr. Y, chief of surgery at the nearby university hospital, for further evaluation. This type of tumor is benign in 60% of cases and is malignant in the other 40% of cases. Mr. X’s remaining lifetime will depend on the type of tumor (benign or malignant) and on the decision whether or not to remove the tumor. The table below shows the estimates of Mr. X’s remaining lifetime according to the most up-to-date information known about this type of tumor.
Tumor Leave tumor Remove tumor
Benign 8 5
Malignant 1 5
Dr. Y could perform exploratory surgery before deciding whether or not to remove the tumor to assess the status of the tumor better. Exploratory surgery indicates a benign tumor 75% of the time if the tumor is indeed benign. The surgery is known to indicate a malignant tumor 65% of the time if the tumor is indeed malignant. Exploratory surgery itself is dangerous: there is a 5% chance…

- Judy J. was first diagnosed at age 14 with an inoperable cancer. Specialists anticipated that she would not live to celebrate her 17th birthday, but conceded that it was possible, though unlikely, that she could live to her 21st birthday. The treatment options proposed are both painful and debilitating and there is no guarantee of additional years of life even if the more aggressive therapy is undertaken. In the alternative, palliative and comfort care measures will ease the symptoms, and Judy is projected to have a better quality, if not quantity of life. Judy's parents are torn between the decision of opting for more "humane" therapies that will keep their daughter comfortable in her final days or opting for the aggressive therapy that will hopefully ensure that their daughter will have an extended lifespan. They also feel that Judy, who is an excellent student and has many friends, should have some decision in what is finally decided.
