Explanation of Solution

The object with mass 12.00 can be separated into 12 objects with a mass 1.01 each, taking example of a carbon nucleus having mass 12.00 and separate into 12 nucleons of mass 1.01 each. This happens because some work must be performed in order to separate a big object, which is equivalent to binding energy between nucleons. As per the law of conservation of energy, sum of external work we perform and mass-energy of big object is equal to the sum of mass-energy of 12 small pieces. The work to be performed in order to set nucleus apart has to be positivewhich means the whole mass is smaller than part mass.
