As an expert in Industrial Relations, your friend Mary has come to you for advice. She recently received two job offers. One offer is based on the terms of a contract of service, and the other job offer is based on a contract for service. Mary pointed out that while each job offer had really great salaries, she wants to ensure that she will have job security and be protected from unfair labour practices. With your knowledge of Jamaican Labour Laws, what advice would you give to Mary to help her make her decision. Your advice must reflect current realities and include reference to relevant legislation and/or cases to support your position
https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/minimum-wage/state Individual states have the right to establish their own minimum wages. However, employers are subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act and must pay the current federal minimum wages of $7.25/hour for non-exempt and $35,568/year for exempt or more. States have the right to require employers to pay higher rates than federal minimum wages, should the state so vote. Questions: 1.What are your thoughts about the current federal minimum wage? Is it too high? Is it too low? 2.As a manager how will you determine what you will pay your staff? 3.Are there exceptions to the minimum wage guidelines? According to the DOL website, can some employee be legally paid less than minimum wage? What are those categories? 4. Statistically, in the United States, are unionized employees paid more than non-unionized employees? Why or why not?
