Concept Introduction:
Answer to Problem 1DQ
Kinetically stability depends upon the rate of the reaction whereas thermodynamically stability depends on whether the reaction is favorable or not. The conversion of diamond into graphite is a kinetically stable and thermodynamic unstable.
Explanation of Solution
Kinetic stability of the reaction basically deals with the rate of the reaction. It occurs when reactant reacts very slowly. There is an inverse relationship between rate of reaction and kinetic stability. In other words, when the reaction is slow then it has greater kinetic stability.
Thermodynamic stability of the reaction deals on the spontaneity of the reaction. In other words, it depends on whether the reaction is spontaneous or not and also the change in free energy. It is independent from the pathway followed by the reactants and the products.
Consider an example of conversion of diamond into graphite. It has negative value of

- The combustion of methane, is an exothermic process. Therefore, the products of this reaction must possess (higher/ lower) total potential energy than do the reactants.arrow_forwardThe statement Energycan beneithercreatednor destroyedis sometimes used as an equivalent statement of the first law of thermodynamics. There areinaccuracies to the statement, however. Restate it tomake it less inaccurate.arrow_forwardWhat are the two ways that a final chemical state of a system can be more probable than its initial state?arrow_forward
- During polymerization, the system usually becomes more ordered as monomers link together. Could an endothermic polymerization reaction ever occur spontaneously? Explain.arrow_forward9.20 State the first law of thermodynamics briefly in your own words.arrow_forward9.72 Although it can be a nuisance when a laptop computer freezes up and needs to be rebooted, we accept that as somewhat inevitable. But clearly the need to occasionally reboot the control system for the power grid would not be acceptable. Use the web to research ways that engineers ensure the reliability of crucial systems like the control infrastructure of the grid, and write a paragraph summarizing the main strategies employed.arrow_forward
- One statement of the second law of thermodynamics is that heat cannot be turned completely into work. Another is that the entropy of the universe always increases. How are these two statements related?arrow_forwardDefine the term entropy, and give an example of a sample of matter that has zero entropy. What are the units of entropy? How do they differ from the units of enthalpy?arrow_forwardA pot of cold water is heated on a stove, and when the water boils, a fresh egg is placed in the water to cook.
