Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason for the paper clip to float on the surface of the water and sinks when adding to soap water needs to be explained.
Concept Introduction :
The capability of the surface of the liquid react in the manner of thin film is known as the surface tension. It is a physical property.
Answer to Problem 1DQ
The surface of water can’t hold the paper clip hence paper clip will sink into the water.
Explanation of Solution
The intermolecular forces between the water molecules are strong which keeps them close to each other. On the surface, water can form a thin film which is also known as surface tension. This is formed due to unbalance force of attraction at the surface of the water. This surface tension allows the water molecules at the surface to hold the substances which are denser than water.
If a paper clip is placed on the surface of the water (which is in stable state) thus, it starts float on the surface. Due to the addition of soap into the water, the surface tension of the water decreases thus, water on the surface cannot hold the substances and paper clip sink into the soap water.
