To describe:
The function of lymphatic vessels.
Introduction:
Lymphatic vessels are formed by the fusion of lymphatic capillaries carrying the interstitial fluid in the form of lymph. The lymphatic vessels are composed of three layers. The first layer is of the endothelial lining, the second layer is composed of smooth muscle and elastic fiber, and the third layer is formed of connective tissue.
Explanation of Solution
The lymphatic vessels have a structure, which is similar to that of the blood vessels. This characteristic of lymphatic vessels enables them to carry interstitial fluids or lymph. Also, for the prevention of back flow of the lymph, these vessels have semilunar valves in them. It prevents the back flow of the lymph and enables these vessels to subsequently transport the lymphatic fluid to the other parts of the lymphatic system. So, the function of the lymphatic vessels is to transport interstitial fluid back to the blood stream from the interstitial spaces. The lymphatic capillaries then accumulate the fluids from the tissues.
The function of lymphatic vessels is to carry lymph along and, to transport the tissue fluid back to the blood stream.
