Chapter 2, Problem 69EAP
A cat is sleeping on the floor in the middle of a 3.0-m-wide room when a barking dog enters with a speed of 1.50 m/s. As the dog enters, the cat (as only cats can do) immediately accelerates at 0.85 m/s2 toward an open window on the opposite side of the room. The dog (all bark and no bite) is a bit startled by the cat and begins to slow down at 0.10 m/s2 as soon as it enters the room. How far is the cat in front of the dog as it leaps through the window?

I had a dream last night that I was chased by my teddy bear. In my dream, I was sleepwalking at a constant velocity of 60ft/sec. At exactly 4:00 am I noticed my teddy bear standing 1000 feet behind me. At that instant I began to accelerate at 10 ft/sec/sec and the teddy bear began to accerlate after me at 12 ft/sec/sec. At the moment the bear caught up to me, I woke from my dream in a cold sweat. To the nearest second, What time was this?
As a science project, you drop a watermelon off the top of the Empire State Building, 320 m above the sidewalk. It so happens that Superman flies by at the instant you release the watermelon. Superman is headed straight down with a speed of 37.0 m/sm/s.How fast is the watermelon going when it passes Superman?

- You are walking down a straight path in a park and notice there is another person walking some distance ahead of you. The distance between the two of you remains the same, so you deduce that you are walking at the same speed of 1.25 m/s. Suddenly, you notice a wallet on the ground. You pick it up and realize it belongs to the person in front of you. To catch up, you start running at a speed of 2.85 m/s. It takes you 13.5 s to catch up and deliver the lost wallet. How far ahead of you was this person when you started running?arrow_forwardYou stand at the top of a cliff while your friend stands on the ground below you. You drop a ball from rest and see that she catches it 1.4 s later. Your friend then throws the ball up to you, such that it just comes to rest in your hand. What is the speed with which your friend threw the ball?arrow_forwardTwo children are playing on a 151-m-tall bridge. One child drops a rock (initial velocity zero) at t = 0. The other waits 1.1 s and then throws a rock downward with an initial speed Vo. If the two rocks hit the ground at the same time, what is vo? m/sarrow_forward
- A jeepney and a train are moving together along parallel paths at 30.0 m/s, with the jeepney adjacent to the rear of the train. The jeepney driver sees the traffic light turn red, so he accelerates at -2.50 m/s2, and then let his jeepney come to rest. The jeepney is at rest for 50.0 s, and then accelerates at 2.50 m/s2 to go back to a speed of 30.0 m/s. Assuming that the speed of the train remained constant at 30.0 m/s, how far is the jeepney from the rear of the train when the jeepney reaches a speed of 30.0 m/s?arrow_forwardA bomb is designed to explode 2.00 s after it is armed. The bomb is launched from earth and accelerated to an unknown final speed. After reaching its final speed, however, the bomb is observed by people on earth to explode 2.90 s after it is armed. What is the final speed of the bomb just before it explodes?arrow_forwardSonglu loves Vin Diesel and has watched every Fast and Furious movie, even Tokyo Drift! To get Vin Diesel's attention on TicTok she decides to redo one of his movie stunts. Songlu rents a Porsche 911 convertible, pays the extra $10 per day for insurance, and then drives to Big Bear. When she gets there, Songlu puts on her parachute and drives at a speed of 215 mph (96.1 m/s) off of a 450 m tall cliff, jumping out mid air so she can use her parachute on the way down. How far does Rubbab's rented Porsche 911 land from the base of the cliff? O 832 m O 614 m O 1,230 m O 921 marrow_forward
- An Osprey can fly horizontally (not diving) at a maximum speed of 70.0 km/hr. The bird takes off from rest at the edge of a cliff, heading east, and accelerates at a rate of 1.21 m/s2. The osprey can decelerate at higher rate of 2.43 m/s2. The Osprey can reach top speeds of about 84 mph. When doing so, it does not flap its wings. Rather, it relies on its gravitational force to accelerate it downwards. a. Assuming that it starts from rest, and assuming that drag forces are slim, how long will it take for the osprey to reach its top speed? b. How far does it travel during this time? c. Near the top speed, drag forces become important, and in fact the terminal velocity is determined by the drag force. Assuming that the osprey's body can be modeled as a cylinder, with its cross-sectional area equal to that of a circle with radius of 10 cm, what is the coefficient of drag C for a hawk?arrow_forwardA runner and a cyclist compete in a race over a straight course 20 km long. The runner runs at a steady speed of 10 m/s toward the finish line. The cyclist zips at a speed of 23 m/s toward the finish line for 12 km but upon seeing that he is already far ahead of the runner, he decides to stop and wait for the runner to catch up to him. The runner eventually reaches the cyclist and continues moving toward the finish line. The cyclist waits for a while after the runner passes and then cycles toward the finish line again at 23m/s. Both the cyclist and the runner cross the finish line in the exact same instant. Assume both of them, when moving, move steadily at their respective speeds. (a) How far is the runner from the finish line when the cyclist resumes the race? (b) For how long in time was the cyclist stationery?arrow_forwardArthur and Betty start walking towards each other when they are 120 m apart. Arthur has a speed of 4.0 m/s and Betty had a speed of 2.0 m/s. Their dog Spot starts from Arthur's side at the same time and runs back and forth between them. By the time that Arthur and Betty meet, what is Spot's displacement? If Spot has a speed of 8m/s, what distance has he run in this time?arrow_forward
- A girl is standing at the edge of a cliff 100. m above the ground. She reaches out over the edge of the cliff and throws a rock straight upward with a speed 8.00 m/s. a) How long does it take the rock to hit the ground? b) What is the speed of the rock the instant before it hits the ground?arrow_forwardBob proposed Alice to a marriage on the very top of a 30m building. Alice said yes. Bob then put the ring on Alice’s finger. Alice was very happy. She threw her hands up in the air. Unfortunately, the ring slipped from her finger and fell down due to gravity.Bob set up a camera to record the moment. Thus, he look at the footage and determine that the ring was going out of Alice’s hand with speed of vi =10m/s at an angle of θ=30 . The dimension of the building is given below. (a) If the ring were to land on the terrace, how long would it take?(b) If the ring were to land on the Lawn, how long would it take?(c) Where should Bob search for the ring? Terrace or lawn? An answer with no support reasoning will recieve no credit.arrow_forwardCar A was traveling east at high speed when it collided at point O with car B , which was traveling north at 45 mi/h. Car C , which was traveling west at 60 mi/h, was 32 ft east and 10 ft north of point O at the time of the collision. Because the pavement was wet, the driver of car C could not prevent his car from sliding into the other two cars, and the three cars, stuck together, kept sliding until they hit the utility pole p. Knowing that the weights of cars A, B, and C are, respectively, 3000 lb, 2600 lb, and 2400 lb, and neglecting the forces exerted on the cars by the wet pavement, solve the problems indicated.Knowing that the coordinates of the utility pole are xp= 46 ft and yp = 59 ft, determine (a) the time elapsed from the first collision to the stop at P,(b) the speed of car A.arrow_forward
