Chapter 25.3, Problem 1bTH

The photograph at right illustrates the pattern that appears on a distant screen when coherent red light is incident on a mask with two identical, very narrow slits. The two slits are separated by a distance d.

Chapter 25.3, Problem 1bTH, The photograph at right illustrates the pattern that appears on a distant screen when coherent red
Point C marks the center of the screen. Point X marks a point of zero intensity, and points Y and Z mark maxima.

    b. Suppose that the two−slit mask were replaced by a mask with five slits of the same width as the original slits, with adjacent slits separated by the same distance as before.

  1. Would point X still be a point of zero intensity with the five−slit mask? Explain your reasoning.
  2. Would point C, the center of the screen, still be a point of maximum constructive interference with the five−slit mask? Explain your reasoning.
  3. With the five−slit mask, how many minima would there be between each pair of principal maxima?
  4. Would point Z still be a point of maximum constructive interference with the five−slit mask? Explain your reasoning.
  5. If the distance between the centers of adjacent slits in the five−slit mask is 125?, determine the angle (measured relative to the normal to the screen) to the minimum closest to the center of the screen. Show your work.

Coherent monochromatic light of wavelength  in air is incident on two narrow slits, the centers of which are 2.00 mm apart.  The interference pattern observed on a screen 5.00 m away is represented by the drawing below. 1. At point P in the diagram, there is a minimum in the interference pattern.  Determine the path difference between the light arriving at this point from the two slits. 2. Determine the wavelength of the light.
A thin film of oil (no = 1.50) with varying thickness floats on water (nw = 1.33). When it is illuminated from above by white light, the reflected colors are as shown in the figure below. In air, the wavelength of yellow light is 580 nm. Why are there no reflected colors at point A? What is the oil’s thickness “t” at point B?
PLEASE ANSWER ALL PARTS THANK YOU   a.You shine an orange laser (639 nm) on a double slit in an experiment you perform in your physics lab. Measuring with a protractor you see that the interference pattern makes the first fringe at 19.0° with the horizontal. What is the separation between the slits? ______________m b.What is the separation between two slits for which 620 nm light has its first minimum at an angle of 30.1°? __________________m
