Introduction: To explore the diversification and origins of life over several billions of years ago, it is essential to understand the deep, or geological, time. Geological time is ordered into four eons, namely Hadean, Archean, Proterozoic, and Phanerozoic eons. These eons stretch over 4.6 billion years. Eons are subdivided into various eras including Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras. The eras are further divided into various periods, including Cambrian, Permian, Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods.
