Introduction:

Two monosaccharide molecules are joined together to form a disaccharide. This reaction involves removing an OH group from one monosaccharide and an H atom from the other and both together release an H2O molecule. The two monosaccharide molecules are covalently bonded together via a glycosidic bond. Since the formation of disaccharide removes a water molecule, this type of reaction is called a dehydration reaction.
