Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The steps to calculate the number of atoms of an element within parentheses are to be explained with the help of an example.
Concept Introduction:
The chemical formula indicates the kind of elements that are present in the compound along with the relative number of atoms.
If more than one atom or group of atoms of the same kind arepresent, their formula can be set in parentheses along with a subscript which represents the number of units of that group.
In order to determine the total number of each type of atom in an element that is present in a group of atoms within parentheses, multiply the subscript outside the parentheses by the subscript for each atom inside the parentheses.

- In chemistry, what is meant by the term mole? What is the importance of the mole concept?arrow_forwardSaccharin, a molecular model of which is shown below, is more than 300 times sweeter than sugar. It was first made in 1807, when it was common practice for chemists to record the taste of any new substances they synthesized. (a) Write the molecular formula for the compound, and draw its structural formula. (S atoms are yellow.) (b) If you ingest 125 mg of saccharin, what amount (moles) of saccharin have you ingested?
