Chapter 54.4, Problem 1R
Summary Introduction

To review:

The recovery strategy for the population size of a desirable species that has K-strategist life history.

Introduction:

There are two evolutionary strategies- one is R strategy and another is K-strategy. R-strategists organisms are found in an unstable environment, are smaller in size, have a large number of offspring, and attain maturity at an early stage. On the other hand, K-strategists organisms are found in stable environment, are larger in size, produce few numbers of offspring, and attain late maturity. Recovery of these organisms is more difficult than the recovery of R-strategist animals.

Mark Recapture can be written as M N = R Define each term. Use this equation to answer the following question. Show your work. A biologist for Mosaic fertilizer company catches 26 Florida scrub jays as part of their monthly environmental monitoring. Each bird is given a band. The next month, they catch 32 birds. 13 of the birds have bands. What is the estimated population size of the birds in that area?
Calculate the rate of population change for a hypothetical population of wildebeest using the  logistics equation and carrying capacity equation. How can you explain these results?  N = 500, r = 0.1, K = 1000, calculate dN/dt.
Compare/contrast K and r - selected species. Discuss their population growth curves.
