Chapter 58.3, Problem 1R
Summary Introduction
To review:
The design that represents the realistic and the best possible protected area that could be used for the terrestrial biodiversity conservation in the present as well as in future provided that species’ distribution is affected by the global warming.
Introduction:
The global warming is the phenomenon in which the overall increased levels of carbon dioxide results in the increase of temperature of the earth’s surface. The carbon dioxide traps the incoming radiation, which increases the temperature of the land and the water surfaces of the earth. This mechanism of heating is called the greenhouse effect. Change in the climatic conditions affects the distribution of species.

Which of the subsequent options is not included in the red list criteria for species classified as "critically endangered"?
1. The population is projected to decrease by 25% or more within a span of 3 years or 1 generation.
2. The species possesses a limited range of less than 100km2 in a solitary location, and there is evidence of or anticipated habitat loss, fragmentation, ecological imbalance, or significant commercial pollution.
3. The likelihood of extinction exceeds 50% within a timeframe of 10 years or 3 generations.
4. The overall population size consists of fewer than 200 mature individuals.
As a member of the community you are living in now and with the remaining diversity of organisms present in your place, identify organisms you think are nearing extinction/endangered or have low diversity. Afterwards, write the reasons or possible reasons for this. And lastly present a plan on how the community can work together in preserving and encouraging more variation in these organisms in the near future.
Discuss the importance of biodiversity in mitigating the impacts of climate change by providing at least 2 examples. These examples must be real or based from research (local/national/international).

By law, one of the habitats must be left intact to satisfy the zoning laws. The developer works with an environmental engineer to choose which of the habitats should be saved. The environmental engineer suggests that Site C should be saved. Which of the following choices best justifies this decision? Site C has greater species richness and species evenness than either Site A or Site B. This will promote the maximum sustainability for future generations of animals. Site C is tied with Site A for greatest species richness, but unlike Site A, it has representative species from all 3 of the sites within it. Site C not only contains the greatest number of species, it also has the greatest genetic diversity within each species. - The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services published a report in 2019 that described several negative effects that humans have had on biodiversity and ecosystem services. They highlighted and ranked five drivers of these negative effects. Which of the following has had the greatest overall impact on biodiversity and ecosystem services? A. Pollution B. Direct exploitation of organisms C. Invasive species D. Climate change E. Changes in land use and sea usearrow_forwardEnvironmental scientists David Pimentel, Rodolfo Zuniga, and Doug Morrison of Cornell University reviewed scientific estimates for the economic and ecological costs imposed by introduced and invasive species in the United States. They found that, as of 2005, approximately 50,000 species had been introduced in the United States and that these accountedfor over $120 billion in economic costs each year. These costs include direct losses and damage, as well as costs required to control the species. (The researchers did not quantify monetary estimates for losses of biodiversity, ecosystem services, and aesthetics, which they said would drive total costs several times higher.) Calculate values missing from the table to determine the number of introduced species of each type of organism and the annual cost that each imposes on our economy. - Which of the following is not a part of the red list criteria for "critically endangered" species? The population is expected to decline by 25% or more within 3 years or 1 generation. The species has a restricted range <100km2 at a single location and there is observed or predictive habitat loss, fragmentation, ecological imbalance or heavy commercial pollution. Extinction probably is greater than 50% within 10 years or 3 generations. - INTRODUCTION: The environment may be changed by the things within the biotic community, as well as relationship between organisms and the nonliving environment. The carrying capacity of an ecosystem is the maximum number of organisms that an area can support over time. The density of a population may cause huge changes in the environment so that the environment becomes unstable for the survival of that species. Humans can mess up natural selection and have either a positive or negative effect. OBJECTIVES Graph data on the Kaibab deer population of Arizona from 1905-1939. Analyze the factors that caused the changes in the deer population. PROCEDURE: Before 1905, there was an estimated 4000 deer on almost 30,000 hectacres of land on the Kaibab Plateau in Arizona. The average carrying capacity of the land at that time was estimated to be about 30,000 deer.
