Concept explainers
Discuss the following statement as it relates to the stage of the design process you have achieved thus far. The design process is the divergent-convergent process.
Discussion on statement, “The design process is divergent-convergent process”.
Explanation of Solution
Design process in its initial stages starts from the need of the society which gives a vague description of design problem considering neither of the involved parameters. In this initial description only intended function is specified which is not sufficient to design the system or a product, at this instant the problem is viewed as a mere functional requirement but as the brainstorming reaches to the end, design problem become more diverse taking into account a wide spectrum of factors affecting the intended function.
In the second phase of a design problem all the factors are classified into two categories which are controllable and uncontrollable factors. Controllable factors are considered as design variables and uncontrollable factors are left as it is. Now, in this phase problem starts to converge as the number of parameters are reduced.
In third phase, analysis and synthesis of the design is done which further reduces the complexity of design problem. Once the design is synthesized, it is subjected to testing and simulation for its appraisal.
Thus the design process is a divergent-convergent process.

ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS
- In the context of the engineering design process, what do engineers need to fully understand before they move forward with the design requestarrow_forwardOperational research is a scientific approach for decision making that seeks to determine the best design under the constraints. Also describe what disadvantages we can have if the relevant engineering design standard is not followed.arrow_forward
- What are the categories of system requirements that design engineers must consider when they start a design process?arrow_forwardCompany ABC is planning to introduce a new advanced model for their Juice Maker product. The process is mainly fabrication of parts followed by assembly of the final product. The design team of the company is assigned to perform the following tasks. Show how the data is obtained (survey, literature, actual from records). Justify any assumptions used in your analyses. Strategy 1. To set strategy of the operation function based on the following: a. Quality as OQD and cost as OWD. b. The company position itself based on cost. c. The company policy of minimizing use of natural materials to be adopted and deployed. Product Design 2. To design the new model of the product based on the following analyses: a. Use of QFD as a design tool.arrow_forwardEngineering project Explore alternative methods to monitor and meet project milestones, justify selection of chosen method(s).arrow_forward
- How Do We Approach an Engineering Design Problem?arrow_forwardYou are a system engineer for the VRA, a power generation company in Ghana where there has been generation and transmission challenges facing the company ranging from frequent tripping of power lines, system imbalance, and overloading of transformers and to total system shut down of power plants. In a bid to solve the problem, management has requested from you to prepare a technical document of possible solution to fix the challenges. As a system engineer, how would you tackle the issues from the following point of view? (a) i. Peak Load ii. Base Load iii.
