Question
Chapter 7, Problem 16DYB
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The five zones in the epiphyseal plate cartilage, which are specifically responsible for bone growth in length.
Concept Introduction:
The interstitial growth occurs inside the cartilage. The chondrocytes present in the lacunae divides mitotically. The newly formed cells are called chondroblasts. The matrix is synthesized by these two chondroblasts and they mature to form chondrocytes. The increase in growth of matrix leads to more internal growth.

Because of the constant exchange of blood calcium and bone calcium, the concentration of calcium ions in the blood and tissue is very steady. Describe the process of calcium mobilization in bone tissue.
How does the microscopic structure of compact bone differ that of spongy bone (list at least 2 examples)?
Osteocytes residing in lacunae of osteons of healthy compact bone are located quite a distance from the blood vessels in the central canals, yet they are well nourished. How can this be explained?
