Concept explainers
Sea turtles have disappeared from many regions, and one way of trying to save them is to reintroduce them to areas where they have been wiped out. This is done by reburying eggs or by releasing newborn baby turtles on beaches. Why are eggs reburied or baby turtles released instead of fully grown individuals?
To determine: The reason why reburying eggs or newborn baby turtles are released instead of fully grown individuals in area where they have been wiped out.
Introduction: Sea turtles are the reptiles that belong to the order Testudines and the suborder Cryptodira. There are seven species of sea turtles. They are green, kemp’s ridley, loggerhead, olive ridley, flatback, hawksbill, and leatherback.
Explanation of Solution
Sea turtles have disappeared in many regions. On possible way to save sea turtles is to reintroduce them to the region where they have been wiped out. Reburying eggs or releasing newborn turtles to the beaches is a method to reintroduce sea turtles.
The sea turtles spend most of their life hundreds of miles away from where they lay eggs. But, also they have the ability to imprint the beach in their brain at the time of incubation or hatching. The newly born sea turtles appear to become imprinted to the beach where they are born. This helps them to find their birth place to lay eggs. Therefore, it is a best way to reintroduce sea turtles if the eggs are reburied instead of re-introducing adults to a new beach.

- Describe a two-year cycle in the life of an adult female gray whale by answering the specific questions below. Where do they mate and give birth? How often do they give birth? Where do they spend the non-breeding season? (Note this is also where they eat because they don’t typically feed during migration or on their breeding waters.) - Conservation biologists have altered the evolution of salmon populations in captive-breeding programs. Wild female salmon tend to produce fewer large eggs because the large eggs contain more nutrients for the off spring, giving each individual a greater chance to survive. After just a few generations, however, captive-bred females now lay greater numbers of small eggs. Suggest a possible adaptive advantage for many small eggs in the captive-bred environment. This includes ticks and other ectoparasites, but also dead skin and blood of the mammal. The attached image shows a red-billed oxpecker sitting on the back of a warthog with a tick in its bill. A recent study found that the depletion of African mammals due to habitat loss and hunting leads to declines in oxpeckers. Researchers were interested in whether the nature of the interaction between African mammals and oxpeckers was context-dependent. They compared the effect of removal of oxpeckers in two areas in which the number of ticks on the mammals differed. In area 2, stomach content data of oxpeckers showed they consumed ~400 ticks per day. Cows were infested experimentally with large numbers of tick larvae and then oxpeckers were introduced at different stages in the tick life cycle (larvae; nymph; adult). They counted the number of adult ticks that dropped off the…arrow_forward
