The hard determinist does not deny that it seems that we have free will. What they deny is that the way things seems is the way they are. Nothing could ever be any other way than the way it is. Choices do not exist, free will does not exist, and randomness does not exist. What happens depends entirely on the previous arrangements of its cause and could not be otherwise. Hard determinist argue that all human actions are casually determined and therefore we act freely and cannot be held morally responsible
Alienation is a word that reflects feelings of isolation and loneliness. The feelings of alienation can be very depressing as the individual feels he/she is unwanted and does not belong to the place or society where they are currently living in. It is seen as if a person cannot provide for another or does not appear as the rest, they do not have any value. The two main characters such as Gregor within “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka and Tessie within “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson both demonstrate
Teaching is one of the Best Jobs in the World The clock is ticking steadily along. The time is nearing. And then you hear it; enthusiastic, excited sounds of small people coming closer and closer. The next second they make their appearance. “Good morning, Miss!” they exclaim. Their faces are ecstatic and their smiles (with some missing teeth) are so big that you have to smile yourself. Backpacks, and lunch kits go in their proper places and the kids are out the door once more, to run off some more
Life is just a bowl of cherries. After our birth, we go to school and subsequently work until we die with no further progression. Finality in death does not often motivate people to sway from this monotone, predetermined story. But it should. Our lives are blips in the grand scheme of things with no real significance or impact so how do we assign a value to human life? Is a construction worker more valuable than an inventor or a teacher? What can one do to be valuable even in the slightest? As controversial
When it comes to connecting ideas and people in our modern era, there is little doubt that social media brings a plethora of benefits to the masses. The key differentiator is obtaining the audience necessary for making an event successful. For the National Day on Writing, we will focus on Facebook in particular, and the analysis of the audience we will be targeting. The photos, status updates, and events we share on Facebook do more than communicate a specific message. When taken in full context
Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut takes places on two contrasting planets. One is Earth, where war tears apart families and minds, and the other is Tralfamadore, where supernatural alien beings share their extended knowledge of the world. Vonnegut uses the two planets, Earth and Tralfamadore, to show the contrasting ideas of chaos and order, and that human actions have limitations that render them helpless against a meaningless universe. In Slaughterhouse Five, Earth is a grim, war torn place
whether the independent variable had a positive or negative relationship to the dependent variable. This was helpful when studying the graduated colours map of number of votes to determine how the variables could help explain the patterns seen on the map. Once a variable was deemed suitable, an OLS model was run to test the hypothesis that the number of votes is a function of the chosen variable. This process was repeated with different groups of variables while assessing the outputs and altering
seriously considered in a play that is equal parts comedy and philosophy. Stoppard does not seem to intend to provide any definite answers to the questions he poses because doing so would cheapen the experience. All of these events in some way show the randomness of life or its inevitable end. They are never able to explain the significance of any event or come to any conclusion on anything, but in the end it didn’t matter. They were always going to meet the same end, regardless of their own understanding
In the appendix section, we display all betas for respondent 1 and 5. The results vary considerably depending on the beta and the respondent. This pattern and behavior of the model suggest that 100,000 iterations could not be sufficient to have a robust model. Figure 3 shows the beta distribution of the subset iterations (after 10,001 iterations) for beta 1, beta 2, beta 3, and beta 4. As noticed, these beta values have a low dispersion, unimodal and cryptokurtosys; even though, not all beta values
Appealing to those who believe in the ability of one to make free choices, indeterminism is a concept that opposes the notion of any external determining factors. Evidence for indeterminism comes from principles of existentialism, theories of chaos and randomness. The indeterminist belief that we do have free will and it is absolute, resonates in the work of philosopher John Paul Sartre. In his 1946 lecture, Sartre presented his distinguishing idea of “Existence precedes essence.” This leading existentialist
