Nursing is flourishing the health facilities, promotion, and development of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, through diagnosis and treatment of a person’s psychological and physiological behavior, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations (American Nurses Association (ANA). Nursing theory provides the framework which guide nurses to deliver individual nursing care which improves wellness for the patient. An official illustration of nursing theory justifies, for nurses, their function and how it’s valued in the world of healthcare. Nursing theory encompasses the needs, interactions, outcomes, and humanistic perspectives of an individual and includes four levels of theory. This paper aims to focus on the work of Ida Jean Orlando, a middle-range nursing theorist, and her theory of the deliberative nursing process and will bring forth an examination of the importance of nursing theory and how it can be applied to professional nursing practice.

Nursing theories are views and beliefs developed by nurses. Nursing care uses these models in everyday practice. Over the years many nurses have created a solid base of information for nurses to practice by. These women influenced nursing still to this day. All have set the basis for our understanding and comprehension of nursing care. “The nursing theory process consists of six elements; Assessment, Nursing Diagnose, Outcome, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation” (George, p.226). Every patient goes through steps of nursing processes, no matter which model is used. Nurses ensure the highest quality of care when the steps are followed.

The use of nursing theories has practical use and benefits in the clinical nursing practice. One of the pillars of professional clinical nursing practice is patient safety and nurses are required to exercise the initiatives of improving patient care and treatment outcomes. Nursing theories are built from the dynamic process of using nursing science and are reproduced through research and its development by analysis and development of nursing principles (Bousso, Poles and Cruz, 2013). The nursing practice should be systematic and must evolve within the framework of professionalism. Nurse managers and clinical nurse practitioners should be guided with basic nursing theories and principles that will help them obtain better insight on what are the best nursing practices to execute that will yield the best patient outcome. Nursing theories introduce sets of concepts and principles that are often derived from nursing models or other disciplines. This provides nurses a systematic view of events that helps them to design the most appropriate approach to undertake in the delivery of nursing care and in the professional practice of the nursing profession.

The review of literature adequately supports the need for the study. The review of literature starts with the history from 1860’s in the Florence Nightingale era and continues to build upon the history until modern day time (Andersson, Willman, Sjöström-Strand, & Borglin, 2015). Furthermore, the review of literature builds the concept of caring and how previous research has been done do develop this concept related to caring. The researchers also discussed the evolution in nursing care related to the advances in medicine, technology, and time and financial constraints associated with providing quality nursing care. The review of literature built the problem statement by discussing the issues related to modern day nursing that has lead to basic care not being done (Andersson, Willman, Sjöström-Strand, & Borglin, 2015). The review of literature built the foundation for both the purpose of the study and research questions, additionally, both were explicitly state by the researcher in the body of the background. By the researcher building a solid foundation for the problem statement, purpose of the study, and the research question, it supported the need for the research being conducted to evaluate the nurses’ concept of caring and supports the validity of the study.

A conceptual framework is basically a foundation serving as a guide to standard setters to help them establish the principles and concepts. Therefore, the conceptual framework project is to develop an improved common conceptual framework that provides a foundation for developing future accounting standards.
