During and immediately after my undergraduate course, I had the opportunity to work as a volunteer at the American Counseling Association and as a houseparent for an institution that houses mentally ill individuals. The association welcomes students and encourages them to offer voluntary services while they have an opportunity. My experience at the association, as a houseparent, and currently as a paraprofessional for mentally ill adults and children with behavioral problems provided me with a solid footing as well as the necessary resources to prepare for my career in counseling. The experiences gave me an opportunity to attend several conferences and workshops where I had the chance to meet and interact with other professional counselors. These opportunities opened me up and exposed me to numerous challenging situations that helped me to grow both personally and professionally. Interacting with more qualified and experienced people in the association, institution for the mentally ill, and agency that I currently work for has helped me to develop confidence in my work as I sought their assistance and guidance whenever I needed help. The experiences gained while working at the association was helpful to me as I could apply that knowledge and the skills learnt to help my church members. At my church, I was a youth leader and

It would be easy to apply my skills to my coursework at University of the Southwest. I feel that I am ready to dedicate my time to become a mental health counselor and began giving back to those in need. One of my greatest strengths was the ability to maintain an average GPA of 3.8. It took long hours to complete certain coursework, however it enabled me to apply my critical thinking skills and successfully complete all my assignments. My dedication and focus allowed me to continue my education and earn my degree.
My family and friends don’t quite understand my motivations to become a mental health counselor. Personally, I can think of nothing more rewarding than helping people through dark times and giving hope for a brighter future. Deep down, I’m an idealist with enough life experience to pepper my expectations. There are countless possible research topics within the mental health field, but I’ve recently developed a deep appreciation of suicide prevention since volunteering for the Kern County Mental Health Hotline. I’ve also become acutely aware of the relationship between suicide and mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder.
Since graduating I have read about and researched more in-depth information about mental illness, addiction, and family counseling. This strong want to fill a role for people suffering mentally is why I am applying now. I would love to build a career around a topic that is so personal to me and my life.
A) When I think of what makes me a good fit for the Clinical Health Psychology program at the University of Colorado, what stands out is my unique academic and professional background. My education includes a bachelor 's in psychology, a master 's in counseling psychology and an MBA. I guess you could say, learning and growing is something I love to do. For the past seven years I’ve used this education to pursue a career in consumer insights which included collecting and analyzing customer data, publishing several white papers and consulting on research projects for well-known companies such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Nestlé and Procter & Gamble. I believe this combination of experiences has made me a better writer, a better listener and, ultimately, a better researcher.
I envision my future career as managing or owning my own rehabilitation center for individuals who suffer alcohol or drug addiction. Life traumas or situations including physical or emotional abuse, or family history of mental health problems and to gain the experienced needed to manage or run my own facility or center.

I am applying for the Graduate/Transition Program - Mental Health 2016 at Monash Health, as I am very passionate about mental health nursing. It was my experience in your outstanding facility that inspired me to pursue a career in this specialty. I encountered mental health and drug dependency issues in nearly every clinical placement I completed including my surgical and rehabilitation placements. I feel strongly that there is a severe shortage of mental health services available in our communities and I appreciate that your organization provides and supports these services at a high level. Therefore, I would love to proudly represent your organization by being a collaborative member of your team of caring multidisciplinary health professionals.
