Definition Essay: What's The Meaning Of Family

Family means a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household who can be blood related. Sometimes the word family does not consist of the same diction definition. One may say that family don’t always have to be living in the same house hold. Others may argue that in order to be a family they have to love each other, and support one another. In the “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain, discus family as a different convocational meaning.

Family. A word that has about as many meanings as there are stars in the sky. Can family truly be defined, or is it merely interpretive? According to Seccombe, family is a relationship by blood, marriage, or affection, in which members may cooperate economically, may care for children, and may consider their identity to be intimately connected to the larger group (Seccombe 4). Although I do agree with the above explanation of family, I believe that it is inadequate in that it only supplies a framework of family rather than the duties and purpose. To me, family is a unit of individuals, related or not, that symbolize and exude comfort, solace, and support through all the trials and triumphs life throws our way.

A family can be defined as a person or people who make an effort to make sure that you are doing okay. They prove to you that they will always be an important part of your life, and that you will never be alone when you need someone the most. Family is an important factor in life, these people can help determine what type of person you will be. They help shape you into becoming an amazing person. They do not necessarily have to be blood to be a part of your family. They could just be a major aspect of your life. These people could be complete and total strangers to you at first, but if they demonstrate that they will help improve you life, they should be considered family. These people display many characteristics that will help benefit you in many ways.

According to society family is a group, it can be related are not. My definition of family is anyone who is there for you through good and bad, someone who always have your back no matter what. Family is not just blood. However some of the best families are the ones you are not related to.

Additionally, the family of choice consists of people one feels as obligated to as if one was of blood relation. These self-constructed families are no less real or less meaningful than conventional families. In fact, they are known as one’s fictive kin. The bond of this type of family can be formed through several ways. Natalie writes, “for some people, voluntary kinship filled a void left by death or estrangement from biological family, while for others the relationships were supplemental or temporary.” It can be a friendship that turns into a family or a group that one relates to as a family. Either way, the fictive kin family is a blossoming family type. Increasingly, people refer to this as their second family. Some choose it to be their first family when they feel

I define family by a group of people that communicate on regular basic, care for each other, and love each other unconditionally. I think that I was able to construct that definition when I realized that my “relatives” weren’t related to me at all. And then realized I talk to the people who I was related to all more than the people who were considered “blood”. I’ve never been to a family house where I have considered them perfect, every family has their personal issues as well as their own strength.

What is family? For me and most of my classmate, family can be people whom we are related to most times by blood and are present in our lives and supports us. I know this definition is not only flawed but dismissive and cliche because that definition only represent some certain kind of family and not all of them. Google and co might give us a concrete definition of a family but in actuality that definition is flawed because, there isn't any one way to define family but rather the definition of family is drawn by what is not only happening to us but around us and most importantly the advancement of the community/society we live

Determining family structure and dynamics as well as defining the family is a complex process. Personally, I come from a very traditional family. Much like the assumptions made by the students in the article Defining Family: Young Adults’ Perceptions of the Parent-Child Bond by Mellisa Holtzman (2008). This is what comes to mind when most people define family; a nuclear family, with married parents, and biological children. However, a family is a complex system and can take on many different forms.

When you hear the word family, what are the thoughts come to your head? Maybe words such as blood, loving, nurturing; or even in some rare cases, overbearing, ashamed, and disgraceful. We all have a different perspective of what family means to us, but a common trend that most families exhibit is that a family is a unit of protection, a support system and that every family has its flaws.

In my mind, a family is simply a group of people, who loves, supports, and helps each other unconditionally, and endlessly.
