After researching this sculpture of the seated couple, I feel it’s a representation of a culture that views each gender equally. Gender roles and equality have been constantly changing and evolving since time began, the responsibilities and roles vary from culture to culture. The size of the two statues plays a significant role to me in showing they are both equal and one is not favored over the other. The man has his arm over the woman, I think this signifies protection and the small bit of dominance that the male had in the relationship, but also shows that the male has some caring and nurturing qualities as well. There are also some smaller figures located on the base of the stool, many believe these are representative of their ancestors
I think about how the world had betrayed this women. They made this woman plump and empty, she does not even have a face. This statue is nude showing everything to the naked eye, she does not have a desirable body. This sculpture shows how much a woman was respected back in the day, which was very little.
First, The statue of Memi and Sabu is made of limestone and paint, which is a very pale color. Then it can be seen that this piece consists of a couple standing side by side; the male on the left (Memi) has his arm wrapped around the shoulder of the female (Sabu) on the right, who holds a more oblique gaze (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2017). Second, Statue of Gudea, unlike the other work which is an individual work of art, belongs to a series of diorite statues that were commissioned by Gudea (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2017). This statue made of diorite contrasts with the previous work with its very dark color. Furthermore, unlike the couple in the previous work, this sculpture shows an individual man sitting down by himself with his hands clasped together, which shows a sense of
I can only tell by body language that they want to spread heroism between men and women. The use of marble links the sculpture to the glow and smoothness of the male skin. In this sculpture, it appears to be characterized by imagery aimed at the sense of the marble statue. The standing sculpture appears to be relaxed, while the median line makes an angle. While standing upright, the figure’s feet are place in a certain way that brings a shifting effect or movement and a stable poise.
One of the major themes in Pat barker’s ‘Regeneration’ is gender and masculinity, this is my chosen theme. The novel overall reflects the struggles of World War one soldiers and their attempts to overcome the trauma of war experience. In this essay, I will be exploring ways which Barker represents my chosen themes. By discussing in depth and focusing on homosexuality, parenthood, emasculation, and mutism as a symbol.
This pair figures represent Yuny and his wife, Renenutet seated with rigidly formal posture next to him. This statue depicts a powerful couple that looks straight ahead, with their heads held up and blank eyes widely open. The form of their features and
When examining the statue, there is an old woman bent and weary. Her posture helps clue us in , with her age and health. The figure is dressed in cloth that hangs off her shoulders. She carries a basket that is filled with what we may think are offerings. Then on her head, there are vines that create a band around the top of her head maybe used to signify the festival that was going on during that time. The specific detail that is seen on this statue persuades us to want to know the story of this woman. Doing so, the process involves lots of research about the time and art. During this period, artist begin to introduce more inner beauty than physical beauty. We get to learn more about the structure itself, then settle for what is given and seen.
The woman depicted in the sculpture stands straight and tall. Her large scale along with her posture gives her a powerful appearance. Her expression is serene and composed. She does not exhibit much emotion. Instead, she is shown as being stoic and controlled. She looks straight ahead, and her entire body points forward.
The statue is leaning on the trunk, which shows that the woman is independent and probably has authority over some people. The woman is resting on her left arm, which shows that it is relaxed and patiently waiting for the artist to finish the work. The statute seems to resemble a woman who was well respected because of all the detail and design the artist did. Moreover, the figure has long robes which gives it detail and adds to it’s rich look. The clothing and reef make the statue look more formal and elegant like a goddess. By doing this the sculptor adds authority and power to the work. The work, however lacks color, but this doesn't take away from the natural look.
When you observe the face of this sculpture, it seems to be a male because of some of its appearance that is presented such as
The statue represents "Samson slaying a Philistine, an episode from the Old Testament 'Book of Judges': 'And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand and took it and slew a thousand men therewith.'" so of course quite the contrast to a story for example like Zeus running in pursuit for the young charming Ganymede, but you cannot deny the homoeroticism being played out in front of you: two naked men wrapped around each other with only a singular piece of cloth covering just one of the muscled figured private parts whilst both gazing into each others eyes (it almost looks like a still from some gay porn movie which you'd find under the role-playing category). I find it very interesting that the connotations of two masculine figures being tightly wrapped around each then would be drastically different to how they are today in 2016. I believe this is a result in society's
Made of terracotta, this statue was easily over six feet tall and it represented a male actor impersonating a female character. The actor in question was wearing a floor length short-sleeved dress. Even if the dress lacked motifs and intricate designs, the soft creases that ran along the entire dress brings a feminine touch to the overall image. Another factor adding a feminine touch was the detailed hair updo. Both of these soft and delicate features contrast greatly with the face of the character. Unlike the rest of the features, the character’s face is harsh. This had to do with the mask that the actor is wearing. With his eyes and mouth wide open, he is projecting strong emotions. During that time period, since men were the only ones allowed to participate in theatrical plays, they were required to wear masks to present a character. This sculpture expresses the importance of activities and shows how far people were willing to push boundaries just for the sake of entertainment. I was impressed by this figure as nowadays play producers look for a certain type of person to play a certain role whereas back in time, men only had to wear mask to portray a
Although not confirmed, it is thought to be a statue of a man and his wife if compared to other statues of a similar nature and because of the way that they embrace each other. The statue depicts a couple of common status, although the inscription gives off the idea that they had a royal acquaintance. The view that they are commoners are suggested because of their clothes and because they are standing up. The statue was painted using limestone around 2575-2465 B.C, buried with dead commoners who were placed in a chamber hidden away. This was to allow the spirit to have a place where they could receive both gifts and food.
When describing something that influences your gender, most people would assume that your “sex” or our biological identification given to us at birth would be the most definite source; however there are multiple factors and processes that contribute to one’s gender identity. The multitudes of institutions that assist in the socialization of an individual vary from person to person, but are all beneficial in creating a sense of gender. According to Michael Messner, there are two types of institutions, the gendered and the gendering. The gendered institution is described by Messner as “an institution constructed by gender relations. As such, its structures and values (rules, formal organizations, sex composition, etc.) reflect dominant
At first glance of the two statues, they look as if they were part of a bigger, grander arrangement. They both have similar style of carving, composition and go together well. So one can suspect that they may have been pulled out of a group even without prior knowledge of the people the figures represented. There are subtle details in both art pieces that helps to convey the emotions without being too dramatic to the viewer. For example, the position of the art work’s hand or the slight leaning of the head. These may seem to be too inconspicuous to convey a message, but when one sees all these elements come together in the piece, it all makes sense. The main focus of these art pieces are the emotions they convey and not necessary the craftsmanship of the artist. The artist is able to capture the viewer’s attention by making the art pieces convey their messages through their eyes and body composition.
The social position is clear in the stature, clothes and space of the statues. The Gudea statue feet does not touch the ground, and his position for me indicate people in his front venerating him. The multitude of statues and temples he has constructed is indicative of the fact that Gudea wanted his image at all sight in his Kingdom. On the other side, I see more simplicity in the posture of Memi and Sabu and though it is a funeral statue. The statue is more emotional and arouse sympathy and love to it.
